Scozzie

OMG. Sorry I goofed (typed that message 3 times last night and lost it 3 times)

I meant to say to re-visit the marriage record of Robert Adam and Mary Morning, where you'll see that Robert's parents are alive at the time of his marriage but not at the time of his death.

No I don't have any documents for Robert's parents.

Regards
Marilyn

OOPS! I had to laugh - you're too young to be having "senior moments" Marilyn! It was getting confusing - I kept looking for that marriage entry, wondering where I'd put it (somewhere safe?). Our mutual friend AWD has sent me lots of documents, so I have lots of new roads to go wandering down. :D

Hi Scozzie,

Just a wee note to say that your Robert ADAM & family were in Paisley 1881, not Johnstone.
Castle Street is in Paisley - don't want you getting lost!

Thanks Jack. Do you know of any website that has maps complete with street names? I've looked at oldmaps-co.uk, which is a good site, but it only has main roads marked. I've found other relatives who don't have a street address on the documents, one in particular states "Royal George Cottage Dalserf" - any way of finding out where is? (I know of Dalserf, I grew up in Larkhall).

Hi Scozzie,

There are a number sites that will show practically any place as it is today, but going back in time the choice is rather limited.

Here are some modern day sites.
http://www.uk.map24.com/
http://www.mapquest.co.uk/
http://maps.msn.co.uk/(vyp3r1bo02oob345 ... /home.aspx
http://www.multimap.com/map/home.cgi?cl ... anced=true

The National Library of Scotland has quite a few old town maps - none of Dalserf; but it is, as you know, a rather small village.

But maybe contact Larkhall Library to see if they know the location of Royal George Cottage?

Hi Scozzie,

No sign of Royal George Cottage, Dalserf in the Royal Mail Postcode Directory (1998) that I have.

That leaves a couple of possibilities.
(1) It no longer stands
(2) It is no longer called Royal George Cottage

Also, no sign of Royal George Cottage, Dalserf in the 1881 census.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Andrew,

There is a mention of a Royal George Strip near Harestonhill (a plantation?).

It was on this site of Electoral Divisions - No 56, Clydevale.
http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si1993/Uksi_19932439_en_2.htm

Don't know the area, but i think this might be somewhat north of Dalserf?
And i'm no good at those map references at all!

Just a though - I can't find anything to substantiate it - would the Royal George Cottage be a cottage attached to an Inn called the Royal George ?

The only thing I can come up with is a census entry 1861 of a Mary Prentice at Royal George, Edinburgh/Ayr Road, census place - Cambusnethan.

Would Cambusnethan and Dalserf areas have overlapped at times ?

I hope that does confuse things further :?

Hi Scozzie,

I've found the Royal George mentioned on the webpage that Jack found. It is east of Wishaw (Cambusnethan Parish), and looks like cottage(s). It is almost certainly the place that Wilma traced too.

Go to www.old-maps.co.uk and input the co-ordinates 281789,654632 (with comma and no spaces), click on co-ordinate, then search. Royalgeorge (as one word) should be in the centre if the map.

This is about 2 or 3 miles east from the nearest point of Dalserf Parish, according to the 1890s parish map on the National Library of Scotland Digitalmap website.

In the 1881 census, there were 11 households at Royal George, Cambusnethan - Dalziel, Jefrey, Docherty, McKenna (and McGaugh), Kennor, Kenny, McGarrel, O'Neil, McLusky, another O'Neil, and an uninhabited house.

Now for your next challenge - prove whether this is the right or wrong Royalgeorge / Royal George for you.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson
