Hi Ali

I've been trying to do just that but I think he was probably born in Ireland as were his parents and siblings. At least that is what the 1841 census says that I'm feeling very strongly is his family...note the occupation of his father here is Fidewaiter :?

Name: John Fraser
Age: 59
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1782
Gender: Male
Where born: Scotland

Civil parish: Greenock St Andrews
County: Renfrewshire
Address: 3 Sir Michael St
Occupation: Fidewaiter
Parish Number: 564
Household Members: Name Age
John Fraser 59
Jane Fraser 46
James Fraser 9
Joseph Fraser 6
Jane Fraser 12
Mary Fraser 7

Sorry to dash your hopes so quickly!!!!! At least you have some siblings to try and chase down!

Best wishes
Jean

oops...just realized his Dad states he was born in Scotland. All the others are noted as born in Ireland. You definately should track down an original census image and have a look at that......

Does anyone have any advice where I can search for more info on John Fraser?

Now I've found him on the 1841 census (which is amazing), but I can't seem to get any further, it says he was born in Scotland but not in Renfrew so I'm stuck with where to go next? He doesnt show up on any other census so I'm guessing they went back to Ireland but I'd love to know where in Scotland he was from.

Any help is much appreciated.

Many Thanks
Ali

Hello

James Fraser and Rachel Steen are also my great-great grandparents. They were married on May 11 1863 at Carrick Church of England, near Limavady in Ulster. James Fraser was born in 1832 to John Fraser and Jane McFarland. Rachel Steen was born in 1840 to Archie Steen and Bridget McCloskey from Londonderry. They had several children: Matilda, Sarah, Jane, Joseph, John, Mary, and Matthew.

My great-grandfather was their last child, Matthew Fraser, born in Newton Limavady in 1884. The family moved to Glasgow. James Fraser died in Glasgow on April 1, 1892. Rachel Steen died in 1890. My great-grandfather Matthew Fraser married Mary Spiers in Glasgow and had several children, including my grandfather Matthew Fraser, who also had a son called Matthew Fraser, who was my father.

The family was from Northern Ireland and moved to Glasgow at the end of the century. Given the place of their marriage, they were Protestants. The Carrick Church is still there today: https://fredrickhervey4thearlofbristol. ... hurch.html

Very best
Matthew Fraser

Hello MatthewFraser and a warm [TS_welcome]

The original poster hasn't signed into the forum in 10 years :( but with some luck, an email notification will still reach them. Thank you for putting this valuable information on the forum for others to find!

Best wishes,

Sarah

Hi Matthew

That's amazing we share the same great great grandparents! I managed to track James Fraser a while ago now and think his Dad was John Frazer & Jean Mcfarlane as they are listed on his death certificate but I've not been able to track them down exactly, do you have any details on them? I don't suppose you have any photos?

Thanks so much for posting!!
