Some would even say, particularly my Finnish friends, that only possibly the most north western part of Finnland could conceivably be thought of as Scandinavian but there I´m getting pedantic! Even we Icelanders have mixed feelings about sometimes being called Scandinavian. :) I would however like to see the Poustie website if I may.

All the Finns that I know, - and that's a few over the years given my second wife's nationality, - and the time that I've spent there, would at very least gently correct anyone who called them Scandinavian; Nordic, yes, but not Scandinavian. That's why they have Finnair :!: (In fact Finland was given the opportunity to be part of SAS, except it couldn't have then been called that!)

And then, just to complicate matters, 8% of Finns are native Finland Swedish speakers, - identical to Swedish exept for a few old style Swedish words and grammatical constructions and above all the pronunciation, - hence the international letters for the country - "SF" = Suomi/Finland, - the respective Finnish and Swedish names for the country.

If you really want to get a discussion started ask a Finn about the difference between a Finn and a Karelian..............

And I would never dream of calling an Icelander Scandinavian

Hi Fifer,

I found an Engber (Inga) Jensen on a search for Engber over at Ancestry.com (the free search) They say they have census entries too. Anyway Engber was born 1878 I think in Minnesota to Manuel Jenssen and Sigrid Olsdatter, both from Norway.

The info is posted on the tree of one Julia L.V. Sjoberg who can be reached at Julia at July15.com (I just remembered to anti spam her address). If you are sending wild emails to track down the origins of this name maybe she is worth a try.

Good luck.

A very strange first name

Hello

I copied the list below from FreeCens. 1841 Census

I am sure they made an error. I hope so anyway. They wrote down the name CRISTIE. I found quite a few CHRISTIE / CRISTIE born c1773 in Wymess.

I maintain that John's surname is read with a ' P ' If you look at the last line you'll see John Penman, a 'porter age 19' and the 'P ' is exactly like the one above for the " blacksmith "

I found it very hard to read PENMAN from the photocopy of the page, shown here. That surname has an ' i ' and you can see the dot.

CRISTIE John M 68 Blacksmith Outside Census County (1841)

CRISTIE Eogber F 52 Midlothian

BEGBIE David M 25 Tailor Midlothian

PENMAN John M 19 Porter Midlothian

As for ENGBER, I think you can read that as EOGBER. Yes I think its more likely to be that. Still a strange name.
