Yes, I am really chuffed! This particular ancestor and her husband have been driving me crazy for about twenty years now and so it's really good to finally have something that makes sense.

I have already found that she is still not easy to find! I might be able to make links through DNA matching at Ancestry though because there are a few third and fourth cousins connected to the surname Hanlon. It will take time but I think I may be on the right track finally!

Saturday 15 November 1873 'North British Daily Mail'

A young woman, whose maiden name is Jane Hanlan, was at yesterday's Police Court re- mitted to the Sheriff for examination on a charge of bigamy. It appears that about 10 years ago she was married in Partick to a man to a man of the name of Caine, The marriage was not a happy one, however, and some months after Caine “ went forth,” no one knew where, The forsaken wife, after the lapse of seven long years years, during which inquiries had been tepeatedly made after her lost husband, mesting with a man named Cotterill, him to coa- sole her by leading her again to the Hymeneal altar. All went smoothly till about a year afterwards, when Cotterill, being employed in a shipbuilding yard at Port-Glasgow, formed an acquaintance with a fellow- workman known as Brown. The two returned to Partick, and a mutual friend, recognising in Brown the long-lost Caine, introduced the men to each other in thelr real characters. Nothing of startling or particularly romantic character ensued; Jane con- tinued to reside with her last acquisition, whom she ecoms to have preferred and Caine, apparently quite indifferent about the matter, gave no treuble what- tm ever All three have forsome months been residing

That's as much as I can piece together from the BNA.

The next question is why did 'Caine' become 'Brown'? what was he running away from in the city?

What is with them all changing their names all the time!!! Brown?

I am not having any luck with Jane under her Hanlon surname either. I have spent the whole day looking everywhere I can think of and have not had any sightings of a Jane Hanlon being born, in a census, with either reputed parent (can't find likely parents either) or boarding somewhere, so now I am wondering if even that name is made up. Similarly William Kane seems to be a dark horse as well, but I suspect his family is from Ireland.

It is a real puzzle!

There is a marriage of Jane HANLAN to William CAINE in 1863 in Partick Gros ref 646 / 2 / 101.
This may have further details regarding her parents.

The strange thing about the newspaper article is that she was charged with Bigamy despite the period of time that had passed and the reported unsuccessful attempts to trace William giving her the perfect defence.
Added: Given that she was found guilty it would appear that her claims regarding the timeline of events was not accepted.

Yes, I found that record some time ago and wondered if it was her. This was before any mention of the suname Hanlo(a)n. I kept it in mind when searching because she had said on her marriage registration that she was previously Kane.

I wonder why she felt she had to tell lies on every record, but I am stumped as to why she chose the surname Inglis on all of her children's birth registrations, and because of that, it is on her death registration, too.

The names of her parents have varied from Michael McLaughlan (marriage registration to John Cotterill) and Jane Queen to Thomas Inglis and Jane McLachlan (poorhouse record for husband John Cotterill) to Michael Hanlan and Jane Mclauchlan (marriage registration to William Caine).

She continues to drive me crazy!

To add to this, I can't find records of her husband John, reputed to be born in England, father Joseph and mother Jane or Sarah Fitton. They had something to hide, that is for sure!!

Wow this amazing! Fantastic sleuthing. It really helps me to have a picture of what was occuring in their lives. My mum will love hearing about this. We are related to Jane as she my great great grandmother so my mums great grandmother.

Sarah her daughter is my great grandmother. My mum speaks of sarah as a quite a mean lady. Often creating boundaries and ways to tell children off for being children. I think my mum was a bit scared of her. Her husband high, great fun and lovely. Though if I was sarah and pregnant non stop with a socially awkward parent prison situation I’m sure I’d have trauma and her behaviour is probably rational with all that!

The family having poorhouse links is interesting, sad too. I see themes of poverty continued for this family until my mums generation
