The odd christian names are definitely a bonus.

I have a Nugent McKinnon (I just could not make any sense of the name on the certificate, and eventually had to look up the index!)

Fortunately, it too late for my parents to call me Caractacus Flavius Mark Anthony Beauregard etc (purely to assist future generations of genealogists... :? )

Hi

My favourite is Theophilus Bonning, who is a collateral of the children. Another one I was rather fond of is Selkrig Denholm who was known as Sarah. She is probably not related at all but it was possible.

Husband, David has a few Lucretias in his tree from Hampshire and Wiltshire in the C17, 18 and early 19.

Sounds like an appropriate juncture to revive my proposal to form a McHoughmagandie clan association

On the Scottish side I have Enos (not the liver-salts!).

On the English side my gggrandfather named his male children after well-known personalities of the time, ie Justus Liebig, Alexander Humboldt, Frederick Maurice (Dennison) and, with a touch of megalomania, himself, George Sexton (full name George Sexton SEXTON). His daughter was common or garden Mary Anne Emma :( .

My husband has a male ROSE (bit like that song 'a boy namedSue').

I have a few strange ones in my family tree (names, that is ). Raddy Linton, female, born 1872 in Newhaven, Leith who had a brother called Niccol. Also a Macnaughton Hunter Niddrie, male, born, 1837, Montrose and a Shepherd Brown (male), born Dundee 1801, to name a few. Shepherd was given his mother's maiden surname as a first name but I've no idea about the others.

Hi Jim
Thanks for the link, now I know that the name Minnie is of Teutonic origin and means Remembrance; Love; Loving. I should have checked it out before, but I got too busy crashing into the brick walls the other side of my family had built

I still think the Puritans take the cake in terms of odd names. I have side branches in my tree with people like Deliverance Wakelyn, Experience Dart and Thankfull Shaylor. My all-time favorite name of a direct ancestor, however, has to be my ggggg grandmother Mindwell Bliss-- great name!

My most unusual christian name so far is Kazia or Kezia Gallagher. Probably born in the 1860-70 time period. Likely to be Irish, but Ihaven't checked up on her yet as she is a side-side branch.

Cathie,
my great grandmothers name was Mynye, but often spelt Minnie. She was born in Australia in 1860, but not sure yet where her parents came from. Their surnames were Thompson and Wake, so nothing unusual. So if anyone else knows where this name might have originated from, I would love to know.
