McVake

Post by Scozzie » Sat Jul 09, 2005 12:23 am

You are all WONDERFUL! This definitely looks like my family, especially the Catherine Clark, as I was named after her. Small wonder I couldn't find them, all the variations of the surname. A point in the right direction is good, but a great big shove is an enormous help! Thankyou SO much. :D

OPR - Lesmahagow

Hi Scozzie,

I'd a look at the original page of the marriage - 99% certain it was Malvake, and not Mahrake.

OPR 649 Vol 5 p 12 Marriages - Lesmahagow.
"William MALVAKE and Janet SCOTT both in this Parish were booked
for proclamation of Banns 15th March. Married 6th April 1823"

Jack you are wonderful! Thankyou so much. I've found so many variations of the surname - I wonder what it was originally! I haven't been able to do any searching for a while, as the computer has been in hospital. Would have been cheaper to get a new one than get it fixed!

All these McVakes! I've found so many variations - Malvake, McVick, McVicker, Mahrake! How many more are there? I think I've found Catherine's parents (with loads of help from some wonderful people here), William Malvake & Janet Scott, married 1823. on the LDS site Catherine's birth has McVick, her marriage has McVake! She was my great-great-grandmother - I might have more luck with another great-great-grandmother - she married John Smith! (at least I have their marriage date). I only found one sister for Catherine, Marion. They were born 13 years apart, surely there were other siblings?

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply - I've had lots of computer problems, and been busy. I really appreciate everyone's help with this. I'm not banging my head on the walls quite so much. Figured out where Annie Helen & Margaret came from........... it was a really bad scribble of a family tree - they belonged to the OTHER set of great--great-grandparents! Both sides had a Margaret and a Robert, which didn't help. I've thrown out my drawing board!!

Unless they are well hidden, the online IGI gives only the two girls that you found.
  • CATHERINE MALVAKE - Christening: 11 JAN 1827 Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland
MARION MALVAKE - Christening: 29 JUN 1834 Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland
A look at the full batch (that OPR book) online, shows Lesmahagow to be one of the many batches where only the female births are shown in the online index. These girls may have had brothers, but the online version if the IGI will not show them. The full list of births will be on the microfiche or CD versions of the IGI that are available in various libraries and LDS Family History Centres.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

How strange, only females. I've got census listings for 1851-1881, showing lots more. Sons William, John, Robert, Alexander, daughters Christina & Janet as well as Catherine & Marion. The later years show grandchildren too. Thanks everyone for your help, I couldn't have found this much without you.
