On other threads I have mentioned my husband's great grandfather's brother:
CHRISTMAS SPARKS, born in Norwich.
Although it might be unusal for us, there were quite a few of them over the generations, and Christmas does seem to be not unusual in Norfolk.
This is on his mother's side.
On his father's side, there are a few girls called ZILPHA (sometimes spelt ZILPAH), and some called THIRZA.

In my own family, there is one ( my family tree program tells me he is my first cousin twice removed!) whose first two Christiam names were EDWARD GRGORY. That's all right, and was on his Birth certificate and on his death certificate. but his marriage cert has him as EDWARD GREGORY NAZIANIAN. This side of my family is almost exclusively from the West of Ireland so where did that name come from?
This is fun!!
Cheers

I am glad I started this thread, there has been some really fantastic names.

There were certainly some people with imagination, not sure what the weans thought.

Just to expand on this thread, I wonder what future generations will think of modern names when they come round to searching.
Example is my Grandson named PHOENIX .
Saving grace is his second name is a good old Scots one JAMES.
And with a Surname like JONES maybe it's as well they named him that! :) :) :)

My Granny Elliot was upset that my Mum and Dad were going to call me JILL, apparently regarding it as a Sassenach name so I got Roberta instead and spent my entire schooldays spelling it to teachers in classrooms full of Jeans,Margarets and Jimmies.
A name I came across somewhere is
JANINE HORTENSE FREDERIC MARIA BANDEUER DE BEAUFORT, who married a very plain Alexander Strachan in Douglas,18 Aug 1815. Somehow it conjures thoughts of wild romance, galloping horses, Gretna....
Another name that has stuck in the memory is Jemima Jane Lovelady.
Ivie is the most unusual for my lot, it ran through the male Fergusons for several generations.
Bobby in Melbourne
family names are McEwan,Parlan Stirlingshire;Elliot,Hyslop, Beattie Dumfries/Borders;Ferguson, Grierson Lanarkshire;O'neill, Madill Antrim

Hello everyone

I've just been reading all the unusual christian names posted on this site and very interesting they are!

It got me thinking that maybe someone out there could help with a slightly unusual christian name I'm searching for. Shaw is the name. He's an ancestor of mine from Aberdeenshire. If there's anyone out there who has an ancestor with Shaw as their christian name, I'd love to hear from you.

I have some STUART ancestors who lived in Lancashire - I think they must have originally come from Scotland as every branch of the family had a daughter named Gillis, which was not uncommon as a female first name in Scotland but virtually unknown in England. I quickly realised the value of unusual names as almost every female Gillis in the English censuses turned out to be one of mine!

Fortunately I named my sons before I became genealogy-obsessed!!

If anyone has any ideas as to where in Scotland STUARTs who named their daughters Gillis may have come from (I think they settled in Lancashire around 1700 or earlier) I'd be delighted to hear them.

Hi Janet
These from the IGI:
(only noted a random selection, extracts only, not submissions)

GILLES STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 04 SEP 1687 Logierait, Perth, Scotland

GEILS STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 23 JAN 1694 Rothesay, Bute, Scotland

GILES STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 17 MAR 1737 Rothesay, Bute, Scotland

GEILS STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 16 DEC 1744 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland

GEELLS STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 09 OCT 1763 Innerleithen, Peebles, Scotland

GILES STEWART - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 10 JUN 1823 Rothesay, Bute, Scotland

They seem to be in several areas, but the long list on IGI seems to have a leaning towards Rothesay, Bute.

Best wishes
Lesley
