Hugh Rose Smith (from Easter Ross) married in Edinburgh in 1879 to Elizabeth Reid. They had two daughters: Elizabeth Auchterlonie Smith b.1880 (named after Elizabeth Reid's mother - Elizabeth Auchterlonie from St Andrews)This daughter married in Glasgow in 1901, had 4 children and died in Edinburgh in 1913.
However their second daughter Anne McCulloch Smith (named after Hugh's mother, Ann McCulloch) b.15 June 1882 at 35 India Place Edinburgh has proved more elusive so far.
Her father, Hugh Rose Smith, a mason and laterly a pavement inspector died in 1889 in Edinburgh at around age 40 and Elizabeth Reid remarried to a man called Evan Baillie Fraser Tant in February 1890, Edinburgh. I have not yet found the 1891 census for the family but the two Smith girls took Evan Tant's surname in the 1901 census:
1901 Census: St Bernards, Edinburgh
Elizabeth aged 41 is married to Evan Tant, age 35, master butcher, living at 1 Malta Terrace [in brackets beneath it says](now 7 St Bernards Row), Edinburgh, with step-daughters Elizabeth S. Tant 20, a butchers clerkess, Annie S. Tant 18, [no occupation given] and children by 2nd marriage - Jean 10, Evelyn 7, and Evan Tant 3.
The 1901 census is my last sighting of Anne/Annie McCulloch Smith.
You'd think Tant would make it very easy. It should, as the Tants are not numerous but I'm a bit stuck with this one. However, I suppose its possible she did not take Tant on as a surname "officially", it was maybe just more convenient to put it like that in the census? And Anne/Annie Smiths are numerous even without the possibility of Ann as a first name spelling option!
Any help with this one would be much appreciated.
Best wishes
Lesley
