Hello Utrecht,I would imagine such a happening would be found in the newspapers of the times. The Scotsman can be found online and it is possible to look at archived articles.

Hi Utrecht,
It looks like some of the family story has been a little mistaken. Have a look on ScotlandsPeople. Ailsa Bain, daughter of Alexander Bain and Margaret Craig, did indeed die of "suffocated through a fall of sand", aged 13 years, at Craigewan Sands, Inverugie, St Fergus, Aberdeenshire. The parents were married in 1915 in Kelvin, Glasgow. These can be found on the ScotlandsPeople website. Ailsa's birth, presumably in 1915-1916 is too recent to be on ScotlandsPeople.
There is an RCE for the death.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

hi All
As Heather pointed out, such an incident would be in the scotsman. And it was . If you haven't found the article Ailsa's name has been reported as Elsa. There was a golf tournament on ( at Peterhead ) and the course bordered the Craigewan sands ( as Andrew found on her death cert). Ailsa's father had been taking part. The article also states that Mrs Bain was the sister of the wife D G Craig, dentist in Peterhead with whom the family were holidaying when the tragedy occurs - I would type it all out but i'm a bit slow ...)
A very sad story.
best wishes
Sally
