Caldwell.....

Post by Bonz » Sun Jun 19, 2005 8:52 am

Hi all. I'm new here, online name of Bonz (nickname of Bonnie.)

Just checking to see if I have any relatives on here.

My line:

James CALDWELL (born Scotland, date unknown.)
Eliza (possibly JACKSON?)

This couple went to Ireland at some point (the bane of all researchers, having to pick through the scanty Irish records) where they had a family of at least 4 children (probably more) either born in Fermanagh or Monaghan county.

1. Leticia born 1855 Drummuly parish, Monaghan Co, Ire.
2. William Alexander born 1856 Galloon parish, Fermanagh Co, Ire.
3. Elizabeth born 1861 Monaghan Co, Ire. married 1882 to
John EVANS b 1851
4. Essie b 1864

I don't know where James and Eliza ended up, they don't appear to be in the 1901 Belfast census (by then 3 of the 4 known children lived there, the 4th being in the US by then.)

The latter 3 lived in Belfast by 1892 at the latest. William Alexander (who went by Alex) was there by 1879. Not sure if the parents lived in Antrim county or Monaghan or whatever.

I'm descended from William Alexander Caldwell. His second marriage was to Elizabeth Millar, daughter of John Millar. (marriage 1892 Belfast). They emigrated to the U.S. in 1892. Either a brother or nephew emigrated at some point to Canada, possibly Manitoba.

The family story is that William Alexander's first wife died when her second child was a baby. He was born in 1890. Supposedly William Alexander went back to Scotland (we think from the US, but it could be from Ireland.) He may have been there for the 1891 census. I'm searching that now as finances allow. ( don't know the county, although it appear from where my mother remembers her grandfather pointing, to be around the Ayr/Lanarkshire area, possible another county in that area.

If anyone recognizes these names, let me know. Thanks! I'd love to know from where in Scotland the family originates. I know I don't have much, I did some Irish research in May (my first trip over) and gleaned a little more, but didn't have near enough time. I'm doing what I can do from here, but it's slow-going.

Have you investigated:

http://www.fermanagh.org.uk/genealogy/frstart.htm

for your Fermanagh folks?

And the PRONI site at:

http://www.proni.gov.uk/

The Ulster Covenant and Freeholders records there are interesting.
