Disappearing Mitchell ancestors.....

Living in Wales I have had to do a lot of my initial research on the Net. Scotlandspeople.gov.uk has been great but I have frustratingly hit a dead end in the early 19th century with John and Jane (nee Morrison) Mitchell. They appear on their son's wedding record in 1876 (John snr deceased by that point) and from the son's age he must have been born in 1849, but I cannot trace any further record of the family in the whole country, let alone Aberdeenshire where they were living. Any ideas anyone?
