Hello Everyone,
This is my first post and I'm keeping my fingers crossed in the hope that somebody can help me, so here goes.
Christopher Buchanan brn abt 1821, first marriage to Jean Blacklock 1841-1843 ?. Jean was recorded as mother of the couples first son Thomas, in 1843 at Wallace Hall in the parish of Middlebie, Dumfries.
Jean died in 1852 aged 32 at Lower Allithwaite, Cartmel ,Lancs. Prior to her death two more children Margaret and James 1845 and 1848 were born at Carleton in Penrith.
The 1851 census shows the family now living at Lower Allithwaite Cartmel,Christopher's occupation is that of a Shephered. Place of birth for Christa (Christopher), Jane (Jean), and first son Thomas is Dumfries.
In 1854 Christopher is wed again to my Gt/ Grandmother Eleanor Caddy at Cartmel,on the wed cert his fathers was named as James Buchanan occupation Farmer.
I searched www.frecen.org.uk 1841 census,it did have both family names Buchanan and Blacklock recorded in the parish of Middlebie but could not find a Christopher or James living there. I think I may have found the father and mother or perhaps close relatives of Jane's (Jean),living at Wallace Hall, spelling differs (Wallashall) is recorded as the address of James Blacklock age 55 Cotton Hand Loom Weaver brn Dumfries.
Jannet ... 50 Blank.
Elizabeth .. 7 ...
There was a Jane Blacklock age 20 Female Servant to the family of John Macturk Farmer at the address : Pennersaughs, Middlebie, maywell be Jean?.
As Freecen is an ongoing project Christopher and his parents locality apparantly have not yet been transcribed, can someone please suggest what can I do next.

Hi Doreen
Maybe nothing of any help but...
An earlier Christopher BUCHANAN on IGI was listed as born abt 1808 Pokeskine, Middlebie, who married Margaret BELL (they had a dau Janet in 1840).
On this website:
http://www.cdproperty.co.uk/farms_for_sale/index.html#
is a present day farm sale notice for a Kirtleton Farm at Waterbeck, Lockerbie, Dumfriesshire . In the notice of sale it says the property includes a redundant steading called Pokeskine. It appears to be in the right area? And seeing as Christopher's father was a farmer, and Pokeskine was a farm.......and it appears to be in the Middlebie locale, maybe this will help somehow eventually?
Cheers
Anne

Gt/Grandfather Buchanan -birth and marriage.
Hello Anne,
I did see the record for Christopher on the IGI and thought there was a connection, possibly a cousin, but i'm keeping an open mind on this one.
At www.dumgal.gov.uk Historical Pages found the 1851 census for Dumfries, Janet Buchanan address Pokestone, parish Middlebie, grand daughter of Janet Bell, age 10. Janet is living with her grand mother Janet Bell , the parents Christopher and Margaret Buchanan are missing. There are about 70 Buchanan's recorded on the cesus but no Christopher's
www.freecen.org.uk census project has the 1841 census for Middlebie transcribed,g/mother Janet Bell and g/daughter Janet Buchanan aged 11 months living together, both parents are missing.
I have ordered some 1841 census books for the neighbouring parishes of Middlebie and hope to find Christopher and his parents and perhaps some other family members, as yet i'm also in the dark about brothers and sisters he may have had.
Thanks for the site details will have a look at it now, may find a possible lead there .
Regards

Re: Buchanan
Hi Doreen
Good luck with your continued quest!
Thanks for the link to the 1851 Census for DUM, WIG & KBT - I found a LATTA on there and it helped connect a dot! But wouldn't ya know it - she is a 2 yr old with her granny, and no sign of her parents or siblings - I think they may be in Lanark actually, but it looks like the part they were in isn't transcribed yet - how's that for synchronicity
Cheers

re Dumfries
Hi Anne, well I never, that is what I call a good hit.
I have looked at the site you mentioned and it is the right area, will do a bit more searching to see if I can find the people who actually lived at the farm house 1841- 1851 . Perhaps if I email the property agents armed with a little bit more history about the farm, they may be able to help me .
Ceers for now

Pokeskine Farm
Good Luck Doreen!
I'd certainly keep an eye on the sale of the place, and contact the new owners - never know what treasure they might find behind a wall or fireplace or up in an attic. Wouldn't that be great if that happened

Hi Anne,
Found a Murray family at Kirleton 1851 census, the head of the family was Sybella Murray age 44, farmer of 1300 acres. Freecen 1841 drew a blank, will keep digging in the Middlebie area.
