Henrietta LATTA b ca 1815 Greenock, m Neil MORISON.....

Post by AMBLY » Tue Jun 28, 2005 4:18 am

Dear Andy
I was reading your messages to & from Gran, re: James MORRISON et al, and saw this part of one message:

"Niel Morrison born 1814 married Henrietta Latta in 1837 in Greenock they had a son, Malcolm in 1838 who appears in Lancashire in 1871 with wife Mary Cook"

I am interested in this from the LATTA side. My hobby is a Scots LATTO LATTA one-name study after I became interested in the name of a Fifeshire LATTO g-grandmother, and have a database of some 3100 names.

Other researcher information I have found says Malcolm, son of Neil MORISON & Henrietta LATTA married an Elizabeth McFARLANE and emigrated to Australia ca 1860, though I don't know if he married Elizabeth (she was Irish) before of after he emigrated. So I am curious as to the 1871 Census listing you mention with him in Lancashire 1870 with a wife named Mary? Are you able to tell me more about that Listing if you still have the details to hand?

Many Thanks :D
Anne

Hi Anne,

Neil Morrison's son, Malcolm, did live in Lancashire for a while but he returned to Greenock where he died inthe 1870s

A couple of the brothers did move further afield one died in Canada another in Australia.

I'll have a wee look for the Lattas on Saturday and keep you posted.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hi Drew
Thanks for your message :D
The couciller & Tanner must have been John LATTA born 1788, married Janet LANG, and died in 1874? I think he was son of Robert LATTA & Agnes CRUMB and had a sister Jean and possibly one named Ann. His son Robert LATTA seemingly took over the Tannery. This LATTA family belong to "Branch 21" of the LATTA ORG web group :
http://www.latta.org/

Any info you have on them would be most Welcome - now I know the street is named after them - I had seen the street name on my trawls thru the web, and knew it must belong to one of them - there are a lot of DNB LATTA's!

I see you have JOLLY interests in DNB. I have a Janet (Jessie) Kerr JOLLY
born in Ayr btw 1861 -1863 (her age wavered btw C81 & C91) to Hugh JOLLY & Jessie CLARK. She married a John LATTA of Glasgow, in Glasgow 1885. In Census 91, they were in Dumbarton, East Kilpatrick with 4 children. Is she one of you JOLLY's? These LATTA's belong to LATTA ORG "Branch 39"

Cheers
Anne

Hi Andy
Thanks for your reply - I look forward to learning more :D

I had been wondering on these LATTA's - because Henrietta's brother James LATTA married an Elizabeth McFARLANE in 1836 in Dumbarton, marriage also registered in The Barony, LNK. I thought it mildly odd that James' wife was same name as supposedly the wife of Henrietta's son Malcolm. But then, stranger things have happened....!

I see you have McQUILKIN in your tree?
I have an Annie McQUILKIN born 1905 Partick to William McQUILKIN & Ann Jane JOHNSON. She married James RUTHERFORD on unknown date. James was son of James RUTHERFORD and Mary Jane LATTA. Mary Jane was a sister of James LATTA who married Jessie JOLLY (see my reply to Drew) Does Annie belong in your tree?

Cheers
Anne

Ambly

Unfortuneatly all my Jollys are from the North East none ventured South of Kincadine.

With respect to Lattas there is a lot of information about them in Dumbarton Library see Library links on this site.
My only interest was on when my house was build and it was then I discovered the Latta Street connection.

I live close to the library if you need anything in particular
