Searching for Stirrat.....

Post by bj » Sun Jul 03, 2005 7:10 am

Just found the site tonight and could really use some help. Looking for information about these people.
Margaret Dunsmuir or Dunsmore who married Robert Stirrat in 1769.
Catherine Currie Born 1812 in Argyleshire and married Andrew Stirrat in 1838. Would like to know parents of Catherine Currie. Maybe someone could tell me where to look for this.

Welcome to TalkingScot.

The answer should be on the death certificate - assuming they died in Scotland 1855 or later. I tried a search for Catherine Currie or Stirrat, using various amounts of widcards and got no useful results.

I made the assumption that the older couple died before 1855 - a fairly safe assumption as their 1769 marriage gives them a birth year probably in the 1740s, and survival to an age of about 110 in these days is not likely (I won't say impossible).

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Searching for Stirrat

Thanks Andrew, I think I am out of luck with death certificates. I have Robert Stirrats birth listed as 1752 and if Margaret Dunsmuir was his first wife then she was probably born around that time.
Andrew is listed at LDS as the son of Robert and Margaret. I am also out of luck on his and Catherine Curries death certificates. They came to U.S. by way of Canada about 1851 and I have found their tombstones but when I tried to get death certificates, the county did not have keep them at that time.
Thanks for your reply

Hi BJ,

Unable to help with the parents of Catherine, but was hubby Andrew about 20yrs older than her?

If yes, then there are possible censuses for them in 1841 Glasgow, and 1851 Kilbirnie, Ayrshire.

But maybe you have them in those years?

Hi BJ,

After looking at the IGI i see that Andrew was a few years older, and so here they are just in case you don't have them in these censuses.
