Hi Emma,
Have you been to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to download the certificates? The marriage and death certificates should both give the parents' names; and the death certificate should give you her previous husband's name to enable you to find that marriage certificate.
Have you found her on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses? They should give her birthplace, and may give you some siblings.
That should give you enough information to find her birth certificate, and hopefully give her parents' marriage details, enabling you to go back another generation.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

It looks like her first marriage was in 1900 to a Thomas Marshall.AndrewP wrote:Hi Emma,

Track down that first marriage on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk .
Using the age and location info then find the family in the 1901 census, - they are in the same parish as the marriage.
That census entry will let you see Janet's place of birth. Using her age to determine the likely years of birth, it shouldn't take you long to find her birth.
This will then lead to the following census entry in 1881......
Dwelling: 87 Watsonville Rows
Census Place: Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203693 GRO Ref Volume 647 EnumDist 22 Page 18
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
James MC KAY M 36 M Ireland
Rel: Head
Occ: Coal Miner
Janet MC KAY M 34 F Airdrie, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Wife
John MC KAY 16 M Dalry, Ayr, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Coal Miner
Joseph MC KAY 13 M Dalry, Ayr, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Coal Miner
James MC KAY 10 M Dalry, Ayr, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Scholar
Christopher MC KAY 7 M Dalry, Ayr, Scotland
Rel: Son
Occ: Scholar
Janet MC KAY 3 F Coylton, Ayr, Scotland
Rel: Daur
So it looks like her father was born in Ireland.
From Janet's marriage register entry you know the maiden name of her mother Janet, so it's straighforward to find that marriage on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk as well.
You may be able to go back another generation via the death records of the grandparents of Janet, who married in 1900.

The IGI gives the following children to that couple:
Andrew Paterson
- JOHN MC KAY - Christening: 01 MAY 1864 Dalry, Ayr
GRACE MCKAY - Birth: 28 JAN 1866 Dalry, Ayr
JOSEPH MCKAY - Birth: 02 AUG 1867 Dalry, Ayr
JAMES MCKAY - Birth: 30 MAY 1870 Dalry, Ayr
CHRISTOPHER MCKAY - Birth: 28 FEB 1873 Dalry, Ayr
CHRISTOPHER MCKAY - Birth: 03 APR 1874 Dalry, Ayr
- No obvious sign of John's birth on the IGI (I haven't looked at ScotlandsPeople to see if he shows up there). John's christening is an LDS submission. John's birth isn't on the IGI under his mother's maiden name. His parents had been married over a year by the time he was christened.
- No sign of Grace with the family in the 1881 census. Had she left home, or had she died young?
- It looks as if Chistopher of 1873 died as a baby and his name was used for the next son born to the family.
- Janet of 1878/1879 was born after the point where the LDS stopped extracting the births from the registers (1874-1875), hence not appearing on the IGI.

An object lesson in the vagaries of IGI, as his birth is there in the statutory index in Dalry, 01May1864AndrewP wrote:The IGI gives the following children to that couple:This gives some items to note:

She died aged 3 weeks from "Hooping Cough"AndrewP wrote:[*]No sign of Grace with the family in the 1881 census. Had she left home, or had she died young?
He died aged 31 hours from "Congenital Debility".AndrewP wrote:[*]It looks as if Chistopher of 1873 died as a baby and his name was used for the next son born to the family.
You will often see it written that GSU/LDS extracted the birth and marriage info from the Scottosh records for the first 20 years from 1855. In fact it was 21 years, as the details were extracted for the period 1855 to 1875, plus the two census years of 1881 and 1891.AndrewP wrote:[*]Janet of 1878/1879 was born after the point where the LDS stopped extracting the births from the registers (1874-1875), hence not appearing on the IGI.[/list]
