My father in law was born Henry Lipman Mackay in 1912 in Clachnaharry,Inverness.
His mother was Jean MacKay,the father not known, but due to the unusual name he was given we are guesing it was Henry Lipman(there was no known Henry or Lipman in the Mackay family before this)
He was adoted/fostered by a family the name of Mackie and his name changed to Ian Mackie. He died in 1982
On the cencus of 1901 there is only 1 Lipman family in Edinburgh.
Is there anyone researching Lipmans in Scotland?

Hi there Janem and Welcome
While I'm not reseraching the Lipman name I can add that it was equally as rare on the 1881 census. In all of Scotland there is only one:
LIPMAN, M. Vist <1842> Birth: Ger
Census: Forf Dundee
He was enumerated at the Queens Hotel in Dundee and was listed as age 39 and a Commercial Traveller born Germany.
Best wishes for your researching!
Jean
