Hello Emma,

Terence and Ann were in Glasgow in 1870 and had a daughter.
If you look at her birth entry on SP you should be able to find out where her parents married.
You could also try the 1871 census.

MARY MCGOWAN
Female
Event(s):
Birth: 26 AUG 1870 High Church, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

HOY is probably a mis-hearing of HOWIE (with an Irish accent) or vice versa :!:

You'll find a place and date for their marriage on the birth register entries of the kids, but I don't know if I believe the info, - they may have been irregularly married.

Mc Gowan 1881

Davie,

You learn something every day.

I searched for this family too on the 1881 but came up with nothing although I did find it strange that McGowan was not a very common name. Now I know why.

Should all mc and mac names be searched with and without a space?

I guess I must have been lucky with mine.

Annette m

On IGI and Mormon records in general, if the expected result doesn't appear, yes :!:

On the 1881 census CDs at least, the search engine is inconsistent, sometimes a search McHOUGHMAGANDY will also include Mc HOUGHMAGANDY entries. but other times, you need to search for Mc HOUGHMAGANDY, - as in this case

many thanks David and Nelmit for the information, with regards the spelling of names ,it is as you say ,it is often written as it sounds, in this case on their sons marriage cert, it is spelled HOEY and could easily be mis-spelled, once again many, many thanks. emma

I meant to explain that the reason that there is sometimes a gap between the Mc" and the rest of the name, is that the LDS transcription rules are that words and names should be transcribed exactly as they appear, and it is quite often the case that there is a small gap between the "Mc" and the rest of the name, so that is how it is transcribed.
