Hullo Alan
May I might share some thoughts with you in the hope that they might help a little.
In the past I've found a lot of help from searching "horizontally".
My first thought was: Could Thomas be the illegitemate child of Margaret YOUNG. brought up, perhaps adopted by Robert HILL, so looked on the IGI for a Thomas Young birth in Kinross around 1835. There is a Thomas YOUNG b. 25th August 1834, c.7th September 1834. But his parents were Mathew YOUNG and Margaret WELLS.
Could Margaret then have been a young widow?
Next had a look for Hill births in Kinross, around 1835. A Robert HILL and an Isabella Ross had three children, all born in Kinross, Kinross.
Robert 1825
Janet 1827
Isabella 1829
Could your Robert be the father and have been widowed young?
Might be worth getting a look-up on the 1841 Census for Kinross and see if any of these names appear together.
By the way, who was Thomas with on the 1851 Census? I presume that on later ones he was with his wife and family??
Hope I haven't mudded the water!!!!
All the best with your research.

Hi Catriona.
I thought the same lines as you, found Thomas being born around 1834 to Mathew Young and Margaret Wells but followed them to their death but they seem to be married right to the end.
Have not looked at the 1841 census but in the 1851 census i found a Thomas Hill age 15 as a farm servent in Kinross, but i forgot to write all the info down, all i wrote was the ref 463/3 and the house Lidlannat., these are the things you regret later.
Really would love to find the results to find Thomas.
Thanks.
Alan

Thomas HILL's 1859 marriage register entry shows his parents as alive at the time of the marriage (the same is true of Ann RENNIE's parents) so an obvious way to go is to look for death register entries. They are easy to find for Ann's parents Sebastian and Ann, but there are no obvious matches on a first look for Robert HILL and Margaret HILL MS YOUNG, - that's not to say that they don't exist.
Then there's the 1861 census. If alive in 1859, there must be a good chance of a helpful entry.
What does the 1851 census entry show?, or had Thomas left home by that time?
The 1841 census may also help.
I assume that you have the various census entries, 1871, 1881 and 1891 showing Thomas and Ann, and their 12 children?.........

Hi David.
On Thomas birth and death cert he names his parents but i have not been able to find them at all in any census but i found Thomas in 1851 in Kinross as a farm servant but his parents were not there.
Yes i have found Thomas and Ann with their 12 children but never followed any of the children but the Thomas line back to me.
I need to look at a 1841 census to see if i can find Thomas and hope he was in the Kinross area.
Thanks for the advise, this site is a great site.
