Hi,
I am Steven Gerard Dougan, born in Parkhead Glasgow, married Ursula Knuepfer 12.04.1976. I am a Surveyor living and working in germany
My Father was John Thomas Dougan, born 14.03.1933 in Shettleston Glasgow, married Elizabeth Deeprose 06.06.1953, died 12.09.1993 the first non-miner(Painter).
His Father was John Thomas Dougan, born 14.12.1905 married Rosina Tracy 27.10.1927, died 28.04.1982; Coalminer.
His Father was John Thomas Dougan, born 03.06.1886 married Sarah Finnie 21.12.1903 d.o.d. unknown; Coalminer.
His Father was John Dougan, born 15.06.1865, married Mary Ward 31.12.1884, d.o.d. unknown; Coalminer.
His Father was James Dougan, d.o.b. unknown, married Mary Evers or Evens date unkown, d.o.d. unknown; Stoker on a Steamship.
All Coalminers were probably in Old Monklands employed, as that is where they lived, oldest known adress was that of John and Mary, and Birthplace of the first John Thomas as being 29 Porch Row, Cuillhill Heatheryknowe. My Father and Grandfather lived in Shettleston. I am now stuck and would like to know how I can trace further back.
In the 1881 Census there was a John Dougan married to Sarah Jane living at 27 Porch Row, but I have no indication to who they were.
Were James Dougan and his son John Dougan Irish? if so how can I find out?
I would be gratefull for any help or advice.
Thankyou all in advance
Steven Dougan

John Dougan
Steven,
Do you have the birth certificate of John born 15.06.1865 or his marriage cert to Mary Ward?
In 1881 census there is a John Dougan but his father is William both are coalminers.

Hi Steven
You've got a nice start there!!
Here's my wee stab at adding some hints.....
A parent search on the IGI site for James Duggan/Mary Evers gives one result:
Mary Jane Duggan b. 10 May 1866, Down, Ireland
This isn't conclusive by any means but does point a finger that your Dougan family could well be from NI. And if this is the right set of parents then they were still in Down in 1866 so if the birth date for your John is correct then he was born the year before likely in Down.
A look at the Scottish census records will hopefully confirm a place of birth for John. Since he didn't marry until 1884 the easiest one to locate him on will be the 1891. Knowing his wife was Mary Ward I did a quick search of the death index on the SP site to see when she died. Only one record comes up which I have not veiwed but it well could be her.
1 1929 DOUGAN MARY GRIBBON WARD F 64 SHETTLESTON GLASGOW CITY LANARK 644/19 0301
Now.....if this is the right Mary.....the appearance of an additional surname makes it look like she was married more than once but her age placing her born about the same year as John makes me think that John died young and she remarried. You should view this death record and then unravel a time frame that John could have died in before looking for him in the 1991 census....as he may have been dead before then!
If you need further explanations about the IGI and SP websites please just ask................
Best wishes
Jean

Mary Gribbon
Hi Jean,
thanks for your answer.
you are right, Mary Ward did in fact remarry a Thomas Gribbon and died on the 04.10.1929 so that will be her.
I have only being concentrating on the male side of my Family but looks like I will have to research both sides to get further.
The first John Thomas died between 1927 and 1955
John Dougan died befor his son John Thomas was Married in 1903,
James Dougan died before John was married in 1884
Mary Ward I have on the 1881 Census as a 16 year old living in 2 front Row with her Parents James and Janet (born Anderson) and brothers and sisters ,among which her brother Thomas aged 19 who was a witness at her marraige.
I also have 3 James Dougan on the Primary Valuation Index for Ireland (1848-1864)
1 County Armagh
1 Youghal County Cork
1 Newry County Down
but no concrete indication as to any relationship.
I guess my quest will be more difficult than I thought, but at my age you get to wondering where you really came from.
Just wish I had started sooner (grin)

There are only 10 James Dougan deaths between 1866 & 1884 on Scotlandspeople. Maybe you will get lucky and find him if he died in Scotland.
You should also get John between the dates 1884 to 1903, shouldn't be too many.

Hi Steven
You're definitely on the right track but it will help you to widen the searching to include the females....especially since the death search on SP now permits a search by all surnames for women. It's nearly a sure thing you will find them whereas a search for a John Dougan is likely to give you an awful lot of choices. Don't forget to consider alternate spellings too....so use wildcards to your advantage.
I'd have a go at the 1881 census for you to look for John but my Lowlands disk cracked up on me a few days ago....I'm now in a state of learning to live without
while waiting for a replacement....
I too have a line from County Down and one from Antrim that are proving to be very elusive so know well the difficulties you're faced with.
So glad you've found TalkingScot and hope you stay around for a long while!
Best wishes
