Name Change.....

Post by Scozzie » Mon Sep 05, 2005 2:04 am

I have traced my McKinlay branch back to the marriage of James McKinlay & Isabella Pryde (b1818) in 1838, and his father George who married Agnes Duncan. At first I couldn't find a record of James (1817) until I searched for his parents' marriage, using Agnes Duncan as the main search name. I found George & Agnes marriage entry (1803) and James' birth (1817) under the name KINLAY. Does anyone have any idea why the "Mc" would have been used by James on his marriage? I know it means "son of" - but why suddenly start using it?

You don't mention the source of the 1817 record. If it's from IGI the strict LDS/GSU rule is that records are transcribed exactly as they are, so, if there is a slight gap between the "Mc" and the "KINLAY", then it may well have been trancribed as "KINLAY". Have you seen the full OPR entries?

On the other hand, an ear unfamiliar with names, might well not hear what can be a quite faint "Mc" when the name is spoken, and record it as KINLAY, - most ministers were from outside the area where they took up their ministry.

There's other possible reasons as well, including the wish to disguise a Highland origin, but 1803 and 1817 is getting a bit late for that........

Understood Davie, but I found it at SRO. and if my searching was right, the previous generation was minus another bit - it was then KINLY. Funny thing is, Papa (my grandfather) always made jokes that his ancestors hid in caves during the "rebellion" (who knows, there are stones at Culloden with my family names on them). Maybe they stayed the caves a bit too long. Oh Gawd, will I eventually find Conan the K?
