Place name in Ayrshire.....

Post by John Wilson » Tue Sep 06, 2005 9:34 am

I have an undated postcard which would have been written in 1905-06. The address reads:
Mrs. Wilson, (of New Zealand) c/o Mr. Tweedie, The Schoolhouse, ?, Ayrshire. I cannot read the place between Schoolhouse and Ayrshire. A long word, it appears to start with "Daru... and the next letter may be c. It does not seem to be on current maps of Scotland. Can anyone help with the place name and where it was? Also, what parish would it have been in.
The postcard has been re-addressed to a Mrs. Wilson, Westmains, Carnwath, Lanark. Westmains also seems to have disappeared from current maps. Again, can anyone tell me where it was?
Many thanks
John Wilson

Hello John,

I'm sure someone with access to 1901 census will help with first address.

There are 2 locations for a West Mains farm if you go to www.multimap.co.uk and type in postcode ML11 8LP or ML11 8NB.

The area of West Mains is nearer the first.

Hope this helps.

Hello John,

good suggestion from Annette, and I am pleased to help. The 1901 census has William Tweedie, widower, 49, schoolmaster (teacher), living at Teacher's House, Ballochmyle Rows, in the parish of Auchinleck, Ayrshire. He was born in Dalmellington, Ayrshire.

John

I'd go for - Darnconnar, Auchenleck.

According to an 1882 gazeteer it was as Darnconner (or Dernconner) and the village did have a public school back then.

I don't know where it was sent from (where's the stamp!) - maybe the writer wasn't too sure how the name was spelled, but made a sprited effort.

Hello John,

from David's list, and the 1901 census, Darnconner gets my vote. I am still searching on the Old Maps site for it.

John

For Darnconnar on an 1890s parish map, go to:

http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/ea ... _list.html

Select Sheet 14 Ayr and zoom in on Auchinleck parish - the light blue parish nearest to the north-east corner of the map. Close to the eastern edge of the map, and above the first "c" in Auchinleck is Darnconnar.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hello everyone

According to my Gazetteer, Darnconner was a mining village in Ayrshire 2 1/2 miles NE of Auchinleck.

Best wishes
Jean
