Hector McNeil - Where Was He Born ?

Hi,

I have an ancestor, my 4 X great-grandfather named Hector McNeil who was born circa 1765 but don't know where.
He was married to Katherine McMillan, but can't find a date for his marriage although his children were born from 1788.
in Campbeltown. Family legend has it that the McNeils came from Barra. Is there any way of finding out if they did ?
