Donald McDonald / Ann MacLennan.....

Hi everyone,
I'm hoping some kind soul out there can help me! I'm looking for any info on Donald McDonald and Ann MacLennan. The only info I already have is that they married in Urray, Ross and Cromarty on June 6th 1826. The extract of the marriage says that Ann was from Monar, and for Donald it looks like Banault. or something! Its very difficult to read. I know they had at least one son, Hugh McDonald, born around 1840, however I cannot find his birth on either SP or the IGI. I know from his marriage and death certs that these are his parents. According to Hugh's marriage cert, Donald was dead by Dec 1873 and it lists his occupation as shepherd. However Ann was still alive. I have tried checking numerous death certs for both Donald and Ann, but have as yet had no luck, it doesnt help that i have no idea of their ages.

Where and when did Hugh die? Who, where & when did he marry?

Hi Dennis,

Hugh married Catherine Sandison in Wick, Caithness on Dec 4th 1873. Marriage cert says age is 32.

He died in Cupar, Fife on July 15th 1913, age 72.

On 1881 census birthplace is noted as Strathconan, Ross and Cromarty, but on 1891 and 1901 it is noted as Monar, Ross and Cromarty. Haven't found 1871 yet.

What does it have on the 1881 census for age and occupation for the family?

Hi Dennis,

Sorry, meant to put Hugh's occupation on the last post. He was age 39 and was a railway surfaceman.

Her are the ages of his wife and children:
Catherine (wife) 37
Ann 5
Mary 5
Elizabeth 3
Donald 1

He died in Cupar, Fife on July 15th 1913, age 72.

I pass through Cupar several times a week and know it pretty well (the old parts, I'm not good at all on the many new areas of development) - if you had an address for the place of death I could take a photo of the house/area if you'd like.

Hi Lesley,

Sorry to highjack the thread but I wondered if you know anything about the Fife and Kinross Asylum which was in Cupar. My ggggrandfather died there in 1868 and although I've seen his records from there I know nothing about the asylum itself.
Would be grateful for anything you can tell me.

Off the top of my head I can't remember ever hearing about it, but then I wasn't around in 1868!

The only hospital of that type in the area I can think of in recent history would be Stratheden Hospital just outside Cupar. There is a cottage hospital in Cupar - the Adamson Hospital, but in recent history I don't thnk it was concerned with the care of those with mental health problems. I can ask next time I'm in the local library if anyone knows anything about the Fife and Kinross Asylum.

I had two people who were classed as "insane" in my tree and who died in Cupar in 1874 & 1879 but both seemed to be staying in private lodgings, so no clues there.

April 1873: J. Fraser appointed Assistant Medical Superintendent of the Fife and Kinross District Asylum, Cupar, in place of J Batty Tuke,

resigned. (that seems an appropriate name!!)
1878 Accommodation for 286. No superintendent listed
1925: The Branch Secretary of the Cupar branch of the National Asylum Workers Union was "Mr John F. Balmer, The Asylum, Cupar, Fife".

Me again. It is/was what I know as Stratheden Hospital:

Visitors to the Open Day will also be able to see a selection of 19th century patient records for Stratheden Hospital at Springfield.
The hospital, originally known as Fife and Kinross District Asylum, opened in 1866. The case registers and other records provide a fascinating account of the patients' lives.
Anyone who can't make it to the Open Day can visit the archive centre, by appointment, from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

The hospital is about 2 to 3 miles south west Cupar, near the village of Springfield. Its only a small detour to pass it later this week on my way from A to B, so no problem to take a photo if you'd like one taken and it looks like you might be able to maybe chase up some records too!
