James Baxter -1891 Scotland Census

Post by clancam » Wed Oct 16, 2013 6:09 am

Can sks help me.
The 1891 Census listed a James BAXTER aged 51 and his Wife Alexa C BAXTER aged 46 living at Dunkeld Rd in the civil parish of Auchtergaven, Perthshire. Roll: CSSCT1891_107
Trying to link James to a Robert and Helen BAXTER born about 1771 and living in Meigle Perthshire per 1841 Scotland Census, Village of Longleys. Parish Number: 379
They had a son James aged 40 born abt 1801.
Would "Alexa" be an abbreviation for "Alexandra".
Any help with Wife Alexa's maiden name? Re Alexa C would the "C" stand for Campbell.

Trying to establish a relationship (if any) between a Helen CAMPBELL aged 59 and a James BAXTER aged 19 living same address 1901 Scotland Census. Roll: CSSCT1901_122
at Ballinling Logerait, Perthshire. Reg Nod: 376.
Kind regards

Hi

Best bet to try to unravel relationships, if there are any between the folk you mention, would seem to be to track down the marriage of James BAXTER aged 51 and his Wife Alexa C BAXTER aged 46 who you have found in the 1891 census. The birth of one of their children would also give you Alexa's maiden name and may state the place and date of marriage to make the marriage easier to find. From the Scotlands People web site you can download original copies of the marriage and birth entries - the marriage will not only give you the maiden name of Alexa, but the names of both sets of parents which should establish if James is the same one as was born to the couple, Robert & Helen you mention. There is no other way to really establish who is who, as online indices (like Family Search, Ancestry etc) although a very useful finding aid, do not really give the full picture.

Best wishes
Lesley

Many thanks LesleyB for your reply. Very logical way to find the link, if any to my BAXTER question.
Kind regards
