John Mc Dermott 1856 somewhere in Scotland.....
Hi I know this sounds a daft request for a lookup, but I am desperate, the above named gentleman is my Gt Grandfather sometimes known as John Edward Mc Dermott, he was a seaman and he married Elizabeth Wesson who was born in Earith, Huntingdonshire, her parents were John and Phoebe Wesson.
The small amount of information I have on John Mc Dermott comes from the 1901 census for Liverpool ( his birthcountry and birth year ) and his occupation from his son's birth and marriage certificate. other than that I know nothing of him. He and Elizabeth had their son in Liverpool in October 1883 and because of this and the fact he was a seaman and Elizabeth was a single lady in the 1881 census, I thought they had married in Liverpool in the intermediate years but there is no record and none with the G.R.O can any one help with any advice, on were to start with this one, I thought the two surnames were going to be easy, how wrong can one be, cheers Liverbird

Hi Liverbird
In the period 1855 to 1865 there were 21 John M[a]cDERMOT[T]s born in Scotland - and no John Edward, - overwhelmingly in Glasgow and the West of Scotland which supports my reaction that this surname is more likely to be Irish rather than Scottish......... Bell's "The Book of Ulster Surnames" states "This Connacht name, which is among the 100 most common in Ireland, is in Ulster most common in the west of the province, particularly in Cos. Donegal and Tyrone......."
Black's "The Surnames of Scotland" has no entry for McDERMOT[T] as such, as I suspect that the form in which it occurred in Scotland was MACDAIRMID and variants.
Edward has never been that popular a name in Scotland, and often, in my experience, associated with Irish roots. Between 1855 and 1904 there were 7,166 births of a John SMITH in Scotland, but only 458 Edward SMITHs........
And together with Glasgow which other city in Britain has the largest Irish population
David

John Mc Dermott
Hi David, thank you for your prompt reply and help, I shall try and get back onto Scotlands people but have been having hicups with the site, looks like the search will be a hard one, and although I agree the name probably derives from Ireland, there is no doubt in my mind that he was born in Scotland, but the info you have given will be a great help, cheers Liverbird

Hi Liverbird.
It would have helped if I'd read the subject line !
Based on a year of birth of 1855 to 1857 there are 5 records of a John M*cDERMOT*.
Similary, based on an age range of 13 to 16 there are 6 occurrences of a John M*cDERMOT* in the 1871 census index.
I assume that you've had a look at the various possibilities on the LDS FamilySearch site?
David

Re: missing marriage
Hello Liverbird,
the marriage in September quarter 1883 of John McDermott to Elizabeth West may be worth a gamble. The marriage was at the Register Office in Liverpool, according to http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/ .
Regards,
John

Hi David thanks once again for the information, I have just managed to sort out Scotlands People website so I shall have a go at the Mc Dermott's you have mentioned, it looks more hopeful than I first thought, as you have whittled the years down somewhat, great to have the encouragement from others, cheers Liverbird

Hi John Thank you for your time in trying to help me, I did spot the marriage on Free B.M.D and as it all seemed to fit date wise and I also thought there may have been a transcibers error on the Wesson surname, I dutifully sent for a copy only to find the lady was years older and a widow, any way I have learned a lesson through it, and that is to dot the I's and cross the T's before you part with your money, I daresay we have all done it at some point ,Any way thanks once again, Cheers Liverbird

Re: John McDermott
Hello Liverbird,
I also have one or two English certificates that were not my family. Mistakes are expensive in England. One point of which you may not be aware is that you can specify conditions when ordering certificates, e.g. bride's father must be John. If the condition is not met, you do not pay (at Register Offices - ONS at Southport may charge a lesser fee).
You stated that Elizabeth Wesson was single in 1881. I looked around LDS online but I did not find her. What were the details, and would you let us know the 1901 (and 1891 if you have it) census details for the family?
Regards,
John
