I've lost the plot!.....

Post by CathieL » Mon Sep 26, 2005 6:32 pm

Hello everyone
I've posted some of this story before, got some help, used that help to get more information and now I'm so totally tangled in threads I don't know what the devil I'm doing :?
My choices are 1 forget the whole thing
2 mortgage my soul to SP
It is a long story and I hope some of you have time to read it. What I am
trying to find is my grandfather's family.

Poor house appl.
Patrick Connelly, separated from wife, living at St. James Street, Kinning Park with mother Helen McQuade, widow of Thomas Kelly.
Patrick Connelly 43 born Caledon Co. Tyrone, son of James Connelly, traveller, dead and married again to Thomas Kelly.
Patrick's first marriage, mother's name Hellen Connelly ms Kelly.
Patrick's second marriage, mother is Helen Connelly ms Mcquade
IGI search for children of Thomas Kelly and Helan McQuade
Ellen 1868 Ireland
Bridget 1872 Castleblaney Monaghan Ireland
Mary 1874 Castleblaney Monaghan Ireland
Thomas Kelly (fruit dealer) died Dec. 1906 Kinning Park, informant Wm. Kelly
Ellen Kelly died 1919 in Pollockshields. widow of Thomas Kelly (fruit dealer) informant Wm. Kelly
Ellen Kelly (daughter) marries John Nugent 1896.
Ellen Nugent dies July 1906 at James Street Kinning Park
1901 census shows John and Ellen Nugent and children at 78 Greenside Lane. Also at this address is William Connelly 25 born Ireland with wife and children and his parents Thomas Kelly fruit dealer, Helen Kelly fruit dealer!
Using William's child's birth find William's marriage to Mary Hayes 1896.
William's parents are Thomas Connelly night watchman and Ellen Connelly ms Coyle.
Poor House appl. 1914
Helen Kelly McQuade (Fox)
Age 72 born Co. Tyrone Ireland
Father Thomas McQuade, mother Helen, husband Thomas Kelly labourer dead.
Family Pat 44 born Ireland
Bridget born Ireland
Wm born Ireland
Jane 36 born Ireland.
Daughter Jane made the appl. but removed it the next day
In the IGI I found a Jane Kelly born 1871 in Monaghan, parents Thomas Kelly and Ellen Coyle
This is where I lost the whole plot, I can only find one death for Helen Kelly McQuade so is it two different women, one woman with two families, how is William Connelly son of Thomas Kelly and has my mind turned to mush
That's my story, should I come back to it in a couple of years or give up now.

It really looks like you have two different families here. Thomas Kelly and Helen McQuade (widow Connelly) both probably from Tyrone.

And Thomas Kelly (fruit dealer) and Ellen Coyle, from Monaghan

With a name like Kelly I don't envy the task you have ahead.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hi Cathie

Perhaps you'll find, as I often have, that when you feel "hopelessly tangled " in the skeens of your research on one family, it helps to take a break and look at another branch for a while. You'll come back refreshed, you'll notice things you didn't before and you'll be ready to tackle even the Kellys.

All the best
Catriona

Thank you Andy and Catriona
It just seemed so weird that there would be two couples with the same name and the same occupation and that the children of both couples lived at the same address in the 1901 census, but I suppose stranger things have happened. I have decided to leave it, no sense in getting all frustrated with it .
Thanks again
Cathie

Cathie

I'm not saying that your situation is a coincidence, but just that ever since one particular experience a number of years ago, nothing ever surprises me.

I was looking for the death of someone with a very unusual name, - can't recall the details, but let's say Ebenezer Goudielock McGILLICUDDY, - and, not unexpectedly there were no such records over a period of many decades, and then two in the same year, some distance apart, and then nothing more for the rest of the period searched.

Connected through g..g grandparents I hear someone say, - possibly yes, but I was sufficiently intrigued by this coincidence to trace back both gentlemen by 4 or 5 generations with no apparent link :!: , but that's not to say there wasn't such a link in the next generation.
