Hello Nick and a warm [TS_welcome]

I see the baptisms on ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk, but not the marriage. It looks as though the mother's name was not included on the baptismal register in Fowlis Wester at the time of Christian's baptism, so the marriage record is crucial, unless Joseph and his wife had other children in another parish. A search for any f*l*s child with the father Joseph in the county of Perth gives these results, none of which appear to give the mother's name :(

FOWLIS, JANNET
Parent JOSEPH FOWLIS/
26/09/1756
Fowlis Wester

FOWLIS, GRISAL
Parent JOSEPH FOWLIS/
11/02/1759
Fowlis Wester

FOWLIS, ANNA
Parent JOSEPH FOWLIS/
21/06/1761
Fowlis Wester

FOWLIS, JAMES
Parent JOSEPH FOWLIS/
22/01/1764
Methven

FOWLIS, ELIZABETH
Parent JOSEPH FOWLIS/
22/03/1767
Fowlis Wester

FOWLES, CHRISTIAN
Parent JOSEPH FOWLES/
17/03/1771
Fowlis Wester

It is unlikely that any of them lived until statutory registration in 1855, to get parent information from their death certificate, but just possible.

Another way to at least find out the mother's first name would be to look at the names of the eldest daughter of each of her children and see if there is a pattern.

Where did you get the incomplete information about the marriage, or is it just assumption from the birth dates of the children?

Best wishes,
Sarah

Another possible way, what about a gravestone? Do you know when where Joseph died? His gravestone, if there is one and still legible, should give his wife's name.

Christian's death, do you have details of that? Just an off chance she lived to a ripeold age.

Curious though that the surname is similar to the place name, were they a principle family in the area I wonder? The parish church may be a source of more information.

Thanks Sarah and Wilma
We could only suppose that the marriage of Joseph was about then - could not find any record in or around Perthshire that looked correct.
On his daughters marriage record the father was given as Joseph Fowles, Tailor of Keiler Wester deceased.
All of the birth records we found only gave the Father.
We have found earlier records for Fowles and Fowlis, but cannot find a birth/baptism for a suitable George to tie in with the start of our chain.
The one possible lead is George Fowlis married to Christian Christie in 1682, but can only find two children for them - no George!
Cheers Nick
