Robert Britton & Elizabeth Porter - What Happened to Them?

Post by darylrodger » Sun Dec 16, 2018 8:08 pm

Hi,

I'm trying to find what happened to my 3 x GG grandparents Robert Britton & Elizabeth Porter.
I know they had 2 children Jean/Jane Britton and Robert born circa 1822-26 possibly in Paisley, Renfrewshire.
Jane married James Shedden in 1846 and Robert in 1858 to Margaret Christie both in Paisley.
According to Robert's marriage cert, his father was still alive and his mother Elizabeth was deceased.

I've tried SP, familysearch etc for records, but can't find anything can anyone help ?

Thanks

Daryl

Hi Daryl,
Have you used the 'fuzzy matching' or 'Phonetic matching' options on SP?

Jane is down as Janet Bratton when she marries James Shedden in 1846, so they may be hiding under various versions.

There is a Robert Briton born Ireland in both 1841 and 1851 but his wife is down as Agness [2nd wife maybe?] a Janet is there in 1841 but no Robert.

In fact I can't seem to pin down young Robert anywhere!
edit: other than his marriage in 1858.

I think Agnes could be Robert's 2nd wife too. There is such a gap in age between the children in 1841.

There is a death registered in Paisley of a Robert Brattan age 68 in 1859. I am not sure if you looked at the entry if you would see if he had been married twice though. I don't think they listed spouses in 1859.

Annette

Hi,

Thanks for your help Nelmit & Wilma.

I've had a look at the death on SP for the Robert Bratton which you mentioned and it didn't mention 2 wives, just an Agnes who signed
the death cert. It could be him, as he was alive in 1858 when his son married, although his occupation on the 1859 cert was a weaver,
whereas on his sons marriage it stated labourer.

I do agree that Robert may have been married twice, and that because his first wife Elizabeth died before 1830 that's why she isn't mentioned on
other death certs.

It's frustrating that none of the census's don't mention where in Ireland Robert came from.

Regards,

Daryl

You could try and see if at some stage he had applied for poor law relief. This often gives details of where they were from and details of family, either back in Ireland and/or in Scotland. the Mitchell has the poor law archives.

Poor Law Records for Paisley area are actually at the Paisley Museum so you may be able to get some help from there (although the actual building is closed at the moment for a major refurbishment project but someone must be answering emails in the council I hope!)

Paisley Poor Law records are also online:

https://libcat.renfrewshire.gov.uk/igua ... rl=PoorLaw

(I haven't checked them for the couple in question here.)
Kennedy (PER > LKS > ARM > England); Campbell, Rutherford, McDonald, Sinclair (all PER)
Wilson, Millar (RFW & LKS); Duncan (LKS); Hastings (KKD) (all > WRY)

I did have a quick search of the Poor Law index that Arthur linked to
BRITTON, Robert 1849 11 3970 50 38 Thread Street Ireland
the date is 1849 series 11 statement 3970 and the subject is Robert Britton aged 50 born Ireland address 38 Thread Street
BRATTAN, Robert 1857 11 8442 66 7 Quay Ireland
Then there's this 1857 entry aged 66 though and living at 7 Quay but Irish born [that would be the 1859 death chap perhaps?]

Both might be worth looking at.

There may be other entries those are the 2 most obvious ones.

Hi,

I had a look at the poor law index last night online, and it matches my Robert living at 7 Quay Lane. Paisley when he died in 1859.
His wife Agnes (2nd wife ?) registered the death cert. Now I have to find out where I can view the poor law record for him if
the museum are closed.
His death cert mentions he was to be buried in the U.P. burying ground in Canal St. does anyone have access to M.I's or records for this cemetery ?
His parents were Robert Brattan ? wheelwright, (Britton) & Darkie (possibly Darcie ?) Brattan m.s. Hill both deceased. I've had a look on
S.P., and familysearch to see if I could find them but without any luck.

Daryl
