Cherrybank, Perth.....

Post by John Wilson » Sat Oct 01, 2005 9:29 am

A great-uncle, John McVean, owned several rented properties (tenements?) at Cherrybank, Perth. When he purchased them is unknown, but after he died at Perth in 1896 the Cherrybank ownership remained in his estate until it was sold c. 1957. Although the buildings will have long gone I would like to discover where John McVean's Cherrybank was. We have no address other than just Cherrybank, and when I search the address field for Cherrybank/Perth/Perthshire at old-maps.co.uk, I get the following:
Bank of Scotland, Cherrybank, Perth
Cherrybank, Perth Road, Abernethy, Perth
Craigie Hill Golf Club, (1982) Ltd., Cherrybank, Perth
Cherrybank, High Street, Rattray, Blairgowrie, Perthshire
Cherrybank, Main Road, Woodside, Blargowrie, Perthshire
For what it's worth, the only other information I have is that "electric light was installed into the holding in 1938".

Cherrybank must have been a popular "address"! Can anyone help with this Cherrybank?

Many thanks
John Wilson

An advanced query on the 1881 census CD that includes Perthshire, there are 33 households that correspond. Most of these are where people give Cherrybank as their birthplace. None of the surnames in any of them resemble McVean (even using some imagination about spelling variations).

Two households were in Cherrybank Gardens, Perth (Perth East Church Parish) - surnames Brown and Lockhart.

Ten households on consecutive pages where many of the family were born there, and hence maybe the address could be part of Cherrybank area. These were addresses in "Dunning Road" and "Dunning or Low Road", and one in Glasgow Road, all also Perth East Church parish - in the same Enumeration Book only a few pages away from the Cherrybank Gardens ones above.

All the best,

10 minutes or so later...

Cherrybank can be found on the 1890s OS map at http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/ea ... _list.html if you click on the link to Sheet 48 - Perth. On that map, click on Perth parish - the small parish, coloured pink, towards the south-west corner of that map. Keep zooming in on the parish until the writing can be read. You will find Cherrybank at the westmost point of the parish.

Here's hoping that is the right Cherrybank. It was out of town, so is unlikely to be tenements.

To find it on a current map, go to www.streetmap.co.uk and search for "GB place" Cherrybank. Cherrybank is within Perth town nowadays. As well as housing, a golf club is shown there.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

I was born and brought up in Perth and used to live near Cherrybank. It is a small area of Perth on the Glasgow Road just before you leave Perth on the road west. It's been a long time since I was there but I do remember a small group of tenaments. They were in a side street behind the Cherrybank Inn.

Hi John

I was really interested to read your post. My family (the Browns) were one of the families listed in the 1881 census living in Cherrybank Gardens.

I would be interested in any information you have about the tenements and if you think Cherrybank Gardens are connected.

Thanks

Sarah

Sarah,

Cherrybank Gardens is quite a small street but I think a lot of it has been demolished and rebuilt. There may have been tenements there but I think that they were more likely terraced housing. Next time I'm up in Perth I'll see if I can take some photos for you.

Hi Mike

Thanks for your reply - photos would be great!

It turns out that the Browns living in Cherrybank Gardens lived there for many years with the son of Elizabeth Brown (Robert Ramsay) living next door at one point :!:

Its a shame but most records don't say exactly where on Cherrybank the Ramsays or the Browns lived except for the one mention of Cherrybank Gardens.

Thanks

Sarah
