Come home, Scotlands urges expats!.....

So says the bold headline in yesterday's Toronto Star.

London - Scotland wants its sons and daughters living in Canada to pack up their tartons and return to their homeland. Canadians of Scottish ancestry, particularly those in the Toronto area are being targeted in a drive to stop Scotland's dramatic population decline with appeals to return to the old Country.
Mr. McConnell, leader of Scotland's Labour party is to meet with Prime Minister Paul Martin in Ottawa. It goes on to exlplain how great the Scots always have in ecporting themselves . Canada owes much to Scottish immigrants from the last century in building this Country to what we enjoy today.
It goes on, a study taken in London reports the mortality rate was the worst in Western Europe among people of working age. Scotalnd led in deaths by heart disease and came second for stoke and lung cancer deaths.
In 2000 women had the lowest life expectancy in Europe and men second lowest. and it goes on...

I wonder why the latter is added in their quest to encourage pleople to return. The first thing I notice as I arrive in Scotland is how many people smoke, and everyhere.

This topic has just been debated on Radio Two here in the UK. It was rather heated. Two callers phoned in, one a grumpy old sod from Ayrshire who couldn't wait to leave, the other an English woman who'd moved north of the border to Aberdeenshire and loved it. Made me smile.
