I am attempting to find out more about my 3xgt-grandmother Mary McMillan. She married Alexander Rodger, Engineer on 28/11/1841 in East Greenock and died aged 48 in High Street, Dumbarton in 1863 - her parents names on her DC were given as Alexander McMillan and Janet McIntosh.
I have just found on Freecen 1841
St James St, Greenock
McMillan, Donald M 30 Boiler Maker Journeyman Outside County
McMillan, Mary F 26 Outside County
McMillan, Catherine F 1 Renfrewshire
Rodger, Alexr. M 26 Engineer Journeyman Outside County
McGouw, Arch M 20 Boilermaker Journeyman Outside County
The IGI has a Donald McMillan marrying a Mary Cameron in East Greenock on 2/9/1838 but I can't find any record of a Catherine McMillan born in Renfrewshire in 1840ish.
Was the relationship to the head of the household not given in 1841?
The only things that don't add up with this is that I know that Alexander Rodger was born in Erskine, which would be in the county of Renfrewshire, in 1810.
I presumed that the Mary mentioned in the freecen above would have been Donald's wife as there is a one year old child in the household but I suppose she could have been his sister with an illegitimate child.
Aargh - I'm losing the place on this one! Any help gratefully received.
Jill

Hi Jill
Best wishes
Lesley
Its a great pity, but , alas, no. I think it can be very difficult to work out what is going on in a household in the 1841 because of this, especially if, as sometimes happens, you are not 100% sure you have the right family. They clearly had no thought for us at all!!Was the relationship to the head of the household not given in 1841?

Best wishes
Lesley

Mary's age does match the above although it still doesn't prove anything.

This doesn't help except to show Mary isn't at home with her parents and sister in 1841 as taken from FREECEN.

Either DWWebster's pal, Cassie, has a great deal of info on these families or someone else on this board.
I've definitely "Done" this lot for someone else years ago. There were only a few Rodgers families in the area at that time and the "West End" lot came from two different families both probably starting out in Erskine much earlier.

Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).
Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

When I saw Andy's post thought it might be worthwhile sharing this information. One of my Erskine BLAIRs, Elizabeth, married a John RODGER, in 1816, but haven't yet found an Alexander among them. However I'll keep my eyes skinned.
All the best with your research.

Hello David & Andy,
Just to let you know - Jill and I are not ignoring each other. We tried a year or more ago to connect our Rodger crews and could not do it. Some things were close, but we each have enuf information to know the differences.
The Alexander in my line was born in Greenock in 1800 and was a blockmaker. I have connected with his ggg granddaughter in Melbourne.
And while I am here - I have thanked you both privately for all your help. I will take this opportunity to now do it publicly. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Yes, I had a feeling it was the wrong Rodgers for Catherine but I have also done the other line for someone on the old board.
If I get the chance I'll look through my notebooks, unfortunately I get through about two a week and we're talking at least two years ago! So I don't think it'll be an easy find.
May be easier to retrace up at the Watt (if I ever get the chance, I seem to spend about a fortnight a week in the car taxiing my daughters about).

Hi Andy & Catherine
Andy, it was me who you helped on the old SP discussion group on the Rodger line. I was now trying (unsucessfully so far) to go down the McMillan one.
All the best
Jill
