hi Anne
and a warm welcome to Talking Scot :D

Have you found William Kay's wife in the 1891 census prior to her leaving for Canada in 1894? Just wondered if she was stated as married or widowed at that time.

My military knowledge is not good, so forgive me if I'm havering, but I wondered if the Glencorse you mentioned might have been this one? http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/feature ... t6436.html
There is also a Glencarse near Perth as you mentioned - not sure if it had a prison though? Can anyone help with this one?

Found this 1881 census for Residents of City Poorhouse, Colinton, Edinburgh
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/ ... t1881.html
Thomas KAY, M, 59, M, Pauper, Shoemaker, Edinburgh
Not sure if it is relevant or not?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Anne,

There is an 1841 census entry for a Thomas Kay, Shoemaker and family at Couls Close Canongate.
Thomas Kay Shoemaker Journeyman 25 born Midlothian
Cathrine Kay 25 born Midlothian
Thomas Kay 8 born Midlothian
Rachel Kay 4 born Midlothian
Elisabeth Kay 1 born Midlothian

In 1851 the family were at 33 St Mary's Wynd Edinburgh
Thomas Kay 38 Shoemaker Journeyman born Haddington
Catherine Kay wife 37 born Edinburgh
Thomas Kay 18 son Blacksmith Apprentice born Edinburgh
Rachael Kay 14 daughter Seamstress born Edinburgh
WILLIAM KAY 9 Son Scholar born Edinburgh
James Kay 6 son born Edinburgh

Rachel married a Robert Begley in Canongate in 1854. She died 5/20/1872 at Assembly Close, Edinburgh aged 35. Parents are described as Thomas Kay Shoemaker and Catherine Kay m/s Graham (Dec'd). Married to Robert Begley, Shoemaker.

Do you think this might be your William's family?

Isobel

Hi Anne,

I've found out a bit more about Thomas Kay,Shoemaker. He appears to have re-married after the death of Catherine Graham. The marriage took place on 4th September 1876 and was to a Rosanna Swan who was 59. Thomas was living at 215 Canongate, Edinburgh and is described as a widower and his occupation is Shoemaker. One of the witnesses was a William Kay (his son?). The parents of Thomas were Thomas Kay and Rachel Kay m/s Carter. Rosanna was a Milliner and a widow.

This is Thomas and Rosina in 1881 -

Dwelling: 315 High St 6 Writers Court
Census Place: Edinburgh High Church, Edinburgh, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0224004 GRO Ref Volume 685-4 EnumDist 15 Page 2
Marr Age Sex Birthplace
Thomas KAY M 66 M Haddington, Scotland
Rel: Head
Occ: Shoemaker
Rosina KAY M 60 F Ireland
Rel: Wife
Myles MC FARLANE U 46 M Haddington, Scotland
Rel: Boarder
Occ: Pensioner Unemployed

As you can see his place of birth and age matches that in the 1851 census which I posted previously.

Thomas Kay died in Inveresk Combination Poorhouse in July 1891. He was 79 and described as the widower of Rosina Shaw,a Pauper formerly a Shoemaker. The informant was a poorhouse attendant and there is no mention of his first wife Catherine and the parents names are missing.

Thomas Kay married Rachel Carter in Duns Berwickshire in 1807 and there is the birth of one child, a daughter Helen, recorded in Duns in 1809. There is no record of any births to this couple in Haddington.

Similarly there is no record of any of the births of the children of Thomas Hay and Catherine Graham, but the 1851 census does prove that they did have a son called William in the right place and year to be a strong contender for yours.

Isobel

Post by Ann E » Thu Jun 01, 2006 2:33 am

Hi Lesley,
I posted this A week or so ago or so I thought,
thanks for info.
I have Ellen Kay wife of William Kay in the 1891 census as married.
1894 she ran off with thrice widowed, one eye Irish tailor, to Canada ,with four of her surviving children , When she got off the boat she was Mrs Flaherty and great with child. I have the 1901 census for Canada.
On a certificate of 11.11.1896, for the death of the second twin who died at the age of five in Carisbrooke Workhouse IOW ,of measles. It had next of kin as William Kay, army pensioner, Isle of Wight,
I not sure, about the Thomas you found, the only info on him is 1841 census (I have a part copy of the 1851 census but it has no address, or Parish ) AnnE

Isobel :D :D
Thank you so very much for all your info, Well done.
Yes I do think that is my Williams family , I have the 1841census , it was the only one I could find for Thomas KAY shoemaker,& I have part of the 1851, names of the family only , no address so thank you for that,
Thank you for the additional info on the marriages & deaths, the only things that don’t tie in are the name Rachel ,& the second names of William Darrel Wilson where did they come from!
As to the witness at Thomas 2nd marriage, William was in Scotland
1876 .10 .2 B of Alice Jane KAY at new Barracks Johnston Terrace Edinburgh .
It is mystery as to why were no record of any of the births William & siblings ? :?

Thank again

AnnE :D
