Alexander Grant Farquhar.....

Post by Bertha » Wed Feb 14, 2007 10:22 pm

Hope someone can help me find this ancestor of my husband's or half ancestor if their is such a thing. His father is my husband's gr gr grandfather.
His name is Alexander Grant Farquhar born Aberdeen in 1865, son of James Farquhar and Annie Grant who married in Crathie in 1864.
Annie & James split up after the birth. James remarried in 1870. Annie died in Glasgow in November 1870. She was the daughter of Lewis Grant and Rebecca Duncan.
Young Alexander is in Crathie with his gran Rebecca Grant (nee Duncan) in the 1871 census. Can't find him after that or a marriage, though there are about 5/6 Alexanders the right age in the 1881, how can I be sure which one is mine?
We would love to solve the mystery of what happened to this child,we only found out about his existance in the last 6 mths. No one in the family knew James had been married before until I started digging and found him charged with bigamy in 1868.
Hopefully this may ring a bell with some folk in the Aberdeen area
Regards

Hello Bertha,

I had a look (like many others I'm sure) at the 1881 census discs and there is nobody obvious who could be your Alexander.

I see Rebecca is living alone in 1881 and died in 1889. Who registered her death?

Kind regards,
Annette M

Good Morning Annette
Thanks for the input. A son if my memory serves me right was the informant I think the name was John. I do know from other web sites that there was a John Grant in Crathie, a head gamekeeper at Balmoral, whether this is the same family I'm not certain.
I've even been intouch with Mac McDonald who is doing a Farquhar one name study and he has been looking for him for years!
Mac knew the story and had been in contact with my husband's uncle 24 yrs ago and told him what he knew. The uncle doesn't remember any of this off course, can't remember writing back to him at all.
Thanks once again
Regards

Hi Bertha,
Coming over from the Crathie Folk thread...
I'm sure you saw this one who was a farm servant in Logie Coldstone in 1881. Have you followed him down the years to see who his parents were on his death cert?

Pitloine, Logie Coldstone, Aberdeenshire
Charles Coutts, 55, Head, born Glengairn, Aberdeenshire, Farmer of 37 Acres Arable Emplying 1 Boy
Margaret Coutts, 50, Wife, born Logie Coldstone, Aberdeenshire
Alexander Farquhar, 16, Servant, born Parish N K, City of Aberdeen, Farm Servant

All the best,
Sarah

Good Morning Sarah
Yes, I did see this a while back and feel he is a real possible as the other 2 Alexander Farquhars of the approx age are all with their mum, dad & siblings.
Thanks for the interest

Morning, Bertha,
Unfortunately, I can't find him in later censuses... as I'm sure you have already realized. He looks like a prime candidate for emigration, though. Don't see him in the U.S. or Canada--- maybe Australia?

That said, there is an Alexander Farquhar, born 1867, who died in 1888 in Wick, Caithness... but he is most likely the one who was in Wick, Caithness in 1881, so not your man.

Maybe one of our Australian members will find him?

Regards,
Sarah

Thanks for the interest anyway Sarah.
Might have a go again today, had put him aside for a while whilst I tried some of my other brick wall.
