Renfrewshire 1861.....

Post by Kathy » Wed May 11, 2005 1:01 pm

Hi, I'm a very new member, and I am hoping someone will be able to assist with my present (of many) brick walls.

I am trying to find information regarding Agnes Craig b abt 1854 possibly Greenock, I have been unable to find her birth on SP.

Her parents were Samuel Gibson Craig b 25.02.1824 d 30.10.1872 and Jane McFie. Samuel & Jane were married 27.02.1849 Abbey Paisley.

There are several children Samuel b 1848, William b 1855, Alexander b 1857, Robert b 1865, Mary 1868, but I have been unable to locate Agnes.

If anyone has access to the 1861 census, I would appreciate a lookup.

Thank you for any assistance.

Kathy
ps I was just reading on another 1861 request that there is no name index in the 1861 census, if this is correct, the possible address for lookup is 9 John Street Cartsdyke Greenock, that's the address where Samuel Gibson Craig died in 1872.
McNeil, McNeill, Craig, Orr, Mitchell, McArthur, McMillan, McGregor, Gray, Dixon, Graham, RFW, Port Glasgow, Greenock & Paisley.
Thornton, Lynch, Flood, Sexton, County Cavan Ireland.
Appleby, Cardiff, Wales,Cooke, Holder, Gloucestershire, England

Hi Kathy,

Welcome to TalkingScot.

No sign of Agnes on the online IGI. The lot below were there.
  • SAMUEL GIBSON CRAIG - Birth: 23 AUG 1848 Abbey (Paisley), Renfrew, Scotland
WILLIAM CRAIG - Birth: 15 FEB 1855 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
ALEXANDER WILSON CRAIG - Birth: 20 OCT 1857 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
JEAN CRAIG - Birth: 03 OCT 1859 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
ALEXANDER WILSON CRAIG - Birth: 15 JAN 1862 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
ROBERT CRAIG - Birth: 03 DEC 1865 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
MARY CRAIG - Birth: 13 MAY 1868 Middle Or New Parish, Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
I would assume that the first Andrew Wilson Craig died young and his name was re-used.

The 1861 census should come online at ScotlandsPeople some time later this year.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Thank you Andrew for the reply, and the information about the second Alexander Wilson Craig.

Does it seem a bit unusual that all those children show in your source of information but not Agnes? I am wondering if I am possibly following the wrong line.

Thanks again for trying.

Hello Kathy,

What makes you think Agnes's parents were Samuel and Jane?

Hi Kathy,

Just because Agnes's name does not appear on the online IGI, and hence probably not in the OPRs (also backed up by her not being found on ScotlandsPeople), that does not mean that she was not born to this couple. There were many pre-1855 births or christenings that never made it into the OPRs (Old Parochial [Parish] Records). The absence of any birth record leaves you with the next-best document, the census, in this case the most important one in this case being 1861.

In answer to another point raised in your first posting, when the 1861 census comes online at ScotlandsPeople, it will be fully name indexed.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Kathy,

If my memory hasn't gone again i'm sure Andy said that The Watt Library has census name indexes for Greenock. No harm in asking them!

Could this be Samuel Gibson Craig junior:

Johnstone would have registered under Paisley Abbey parish.

Did Agnes marry a McNeil in 1873?

So it looks like Samuel sr, Jane McFie and youngest daughter, Mary all died between 1868 and 1881

William Craig's 1855 birth cert will show how many children were already born to the parents but I really suspect that James in West Blackhall Street is of the same family.

I'll have a look at the 1861 and 1871 census returns after work today.
Searching for Keogh, Kelly, Fitzgerald, Riddell, Stewart, Wilson, McQuilkin, Lynch, Boyle, Cairney, Ross, King, McIlravey, McCurdy, Drennan and Woods (to name but a few).

Also looking for any information on Rathlin Island, County Antrim, Ireland.

Hi Everyone,

What a wonderful response, thank you all.

I have been searching through all my paperwork to find connections.

Annette, at the marriage of Agnes Craig & Alexander McNeil 1873 it gives her parents as Samuel Gibson Craig & Jane McFie, Agnes's age is 19yrs (1854) usual residence (1873) 18 Arthur Street Greenock.

Andrew, I did think the 1861 census was my best bet, I cant wait to see it.

Jack, thank you for the web address, I will give it a try.

Andy, what a lot of information, thankyou,

28 St Michael St West Greenock, this Samuel Craig & Catherine Gray would have been Agnes's brothers family, information on their children is new to me.

6 East Blackhall St East Greenock, all of this information is new to me.

I will pour over all of this new information this evening, I very much appreciate the trouble you all have taken, its really more than I expected.

1851 Craig

Post by Jack » Thu May 12, 2005 11:53 am

Hi Kathy,

I think Andy is right about the 29yr old James at 6 East Blackhall St in 1881. The 1851 (Abbey) census has a number of CRAIGs (and other names in between) on the same page, including Samuel 27, Jean 25, Samuel 2, James 1.

The No. is 1851 473 Ed 14 p 25 (Abbey). If Andy can't manage a look at it, i'll get it at one point.

Boy! where do I start? I've had such an interesting and I must say expensive evening on SP.

Thanks to all the information you've given me, I have been able to add 14 names to my tree, just by following the threads, and thats just scratching the surface, I will be able to add more.

Yes Jack, the information Andy supplied on James was the correct line.

Samuel G Craig & Jane McFie (McFee) appear to have had 10 children

Samuel Gibson 1848
James abt 1850
Agnes abt 1854
William 1855
Andrew W 1857-1859
Jean 1859
Alexander W 1862
Jessie 1863
Robert 1865
Mary 1868

I looked at the images of the births of Jessie & William & Mary, but nothing was listed for siblings.

On a sad note, Andrew W died at the age of 2, only two days after the birth of his sister Jean. the image was very hard to read, I think the death was from Scarlet Fever.

Thank you all very much for your help, I will let you know if I find the birth of Agnes.
