Researching in Renfrewshire.....

Post by Kathy » Sat May 14, 2005 1:06 am

Hi everyone,

You were all so very helpful in my previous post, could you point me in the right direction with research.

I will be visiting UK during your summer, between June & August, my Scotland search is mainly Greenock, Port Glasgow & Paisley, can anyone give me places and addresses for local research? BDM, Census & Cemetery.

Also, where there any records kept of people migration from Ireland to Scotland? or is this wishful thinking?

Regards

Hi Kathy,

You can find lots of information in Greenock at the Watt Library, 9 Union Street, Greenock. Their phone number is 01475 715628. They have the census records and also lots of information from the Greenock Telegraph (the local newspaper). In Glasgow you can go to the Mitchell Library and also Park Circus. I believe you can find the address's to both these place's on talkingscot homepage.

I'll be in Greenock for three weeks in October.......too bad our timing is off or we could have met.

If you go to the Watt Library there's a great chance that you will run into our very own Andy.

Happy hunting.

Hi Ina,

Thanks for the information, do you know, or perhaps I should be asking Andy, can I browse and view records, photocopy etc., and do I have to make an appointment for search time?

For the Watt Library, have a look at the following web page.

For Paisley...

and don't forget the Mitchell Library, Glasgow

These and more can be found on TalkingScot's libraries page.

(added in later after Ina's post below) Strathclyde Area Genealogy Centre, 22 Park Circus, Glasgow

All the best,

Hi Kathy,

I don't believe you need an appointment at the Watt Library. The librarian there is always happy to make copies for you.

If you go to Park Circus you will need an appointment to reserve a computer. There is a daily fee charged for the use of the computer. Last time I was there I believe it was thirteen pounds.

Thank you Ina/Andrew

I will view the websites and print out addresses, to put them on my "must pack" pile.
