Geddes of Gamrie Banff.....

Post by Tracey » Sun May 22, 2005 9:14 pm

My gt gt gt grandparents were James Geddes and Mary Sim. We had always believed that his parents were Alexander Geddes and Isobel Noble due largely to a lady who put the tree on familysearch and everyone who i have been in contact with has come up with these two. All the rest of the line is fine - thank god the trouble is at the top as after years of research we would all hate to start from the begining !! No one had any reason to disbelieve her until recently i was in contact with a man who doubted them as his parents and also a lady in America who has them as her gt gt gt gt grandparents and she can also back this up. None of us have been able to find James death - but we know it was between 1851 - 61 as he is mentioned on the 51 census but not the 61 - and perhaps thats the reason why as we all went by her birth date for him. I have all the relevent certificates and all seemed to be right so now i need to find James real birth date.
And before anyone suggests it ive already searched scotlandpeople !!

Any suggestions excluding having a seance welcome ?

Hello Justjean !

Why is it that as soon as you move away from your pc you get a mail !!

My Geddes lived according to the 1841-51-61 census in Newton of Melrose Gamrie Banff and eventually had their own farm (?) called Blackcairn which i think the place they had in Newton is one and the same place ?. James Geddes and Mary Sim married march 1828, had 9 children. I have practically all there is to know about them its just James Birth and his parenatage that have now confused me because of the contact i have had with 2 other people

Sorry Jean i didnt answer that very well, its late here !

On the 1851 census James age is hard to decipher it could be 51 it could be 69 as there is a great big black ink smudge accross it !- on the 1841 census it says 40 and on that there is no birthplace . In 1851 he is living with his wife Mary his children James, John, Elspet Margaret and Ann - my gt gt grandmother and also a grandchild that belonged to his daughter Isabel, It says he was born in Fordyce Banff and is a farmer of 20 Acres. I have searched and searched and searched!!! along with many others including my family in Scotland but have come up with zilch !!!!!!!!!

Tracey

Does the children's name and birth dates give you a clue ?

The males are James 28, John 33, Alexander, 35 and William 37

The females are Isabel 29, Mary Ann 31, Elspet 39, Margaret 42, and Ann 44

Who is Mary's parents how do they fit to the children's naming pattern?

There is a James born to to John Geddes and Margaret Innes.
Burns, Quinn - Glasgow, N.Ireland
McLeod, Mackay, Nicholson, McNeil - Skye
James, McLeod, Sinclair, Smith - Renton
Davidson,Adie, Gibb - Aberdeen
Jolly Wishart - Angus
Usher - Newcastle
Mullen, Roe - Dublin
O'Donnell - Ireland, Alexandria

Go to www.old-maps.co.uk and input the co-ordinates 375140,863751 and you will see a map from 1871 showing both Blackcairn and Newtown of Melrose - almost next-door to one another.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

The name thing has been done by the man who first made me question James parentage and the only birth of a James in Fordyce has the father Peter Geddes and nowhere in my line or even the branches off have a Peter. But i will go back to Scotlandspeople and broaden the search years.
As for the map i have seen that site i also have old ordinance survey maps which does show Newton and Blackcairn as neighbours.

Thanks to all

Tracey

Looks to me like a good chance that James GEDDES died in the period 1851 (after the census) to the end of 1854.

There's no testament that I can see on www.scottishdocuments.com, so that all I can think of for the moment is to try MIs, - gravestone inscriptions for the local cemeteries..... if they have been transcribed.
