John Fairbrother.....

Post by maria1 » Mon Jun 06, 2005 7:04 pm

This is a long shot, but rumour has it that my GreatGreatGrandfather John Fairbrother was the head coachman for the Duke of Bucchleuch. I have no idea the date of his birth or where he was born other than when his son Frederick William John Fairbrother was married at age 37 in Cumberland 21/03/1896 John was deceased.
I can find no record of a birth for Frederick, and the ones I have found I have eliminated.
Any help greatly appreciated
Maria

Hi Maria1,

Welcome to TalkingScot.

I've looked in the 1881 census for you Fairbrothers. No sign of any Fairbrothers in Dumfriesshire (hoping for someone around Drumlanrig Castle, the main home of the Dukes of Buccleuch). In southern Scotland, there were only two Fairbrother families, one in Paisley and one in Barony, Lanarkshire; and one Fairbrother soldier in Piershill Barracks, Edinburgh. The two Fairbrother heads of family were an ironworks labourer and a baker. No obvious candidates there. Perhaps your Fairbrothers were all south of the border at that time.

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Andrew and Maria

When I was a wee lass, the Duke of Buccleuch lived just along the road. Well, not quite. But his address was Bowhill, SELKIRK, Selkirkshire. Bowhill had been a family home from around 1812.

All the best

A quick internet search reveals the Buccleuch Estates to be the largest private landowners in Britain. So it is feasible that the Duke may have had coaching staff at many of his properties.

All the best,

Maria

What was the name of Frederick's wife and what was his occupation? Can you let me know the names and dates of children?

Was he by any chance a widower when he married in 1896?

Hi Mary
Yes Frederick was a widower when he married Margaret Jane Graham on the 21/03/1896. His age at the time of the marriage is 37yrs. I believe his first wife to be Mary Jane Coupland, with whom he had two sons and two daughters. I did find a marriage for Frederick and Mary Jane in the June qtr of 1881, married in Cockermouth, Cumberland.

In the 1891 RG12/4305 census I did find a family for Frederick and Mary with two children Annie E and Frederick William. This census was taken in Cumberland and he states he was born in Moreton Gloucester.

Frederick had two children with Margaret Jane, my Grandmother Emma Victoria born 18/06/1897 and Robert Horatio born in the June qtr of 1900.

I found them in the 1901 census living in Cumberland RG13/4884 and Frederick stated he was born in Todenham Gloucester and occupation as mill furnace man.

I thought I had found him in one of the Gloucester census's and contacted a lady researching the same family but she said it was not my Frederick as she had sent for the birth certificate and it was a Frederick C not Frederick W.

I have looked on 1837 five years either side of his birth year but cannot find him. The Frederick's I did find did not have the Father's name as John

When Frederick was married to Margaret Jane his Father was deceased and John Fairbrother's occupation was a coachman.

Thank you Mary
Regards Maria

Hi Maria

This is quite a puzzling one. Like you I found the 1901/1891 census info and tried tracking back through earlier censuses - with very complicated results - and as you say, there is no relevant birth entry to be found.

I won't have time to post the earlier census info for a week or so as I'll be away but I will get back to you once I'm back. (I'm not sure it's going to help anyway! )

One other thing you might find worth trying - I understand that there are records held at Drumlanrig Castle re staff etc.
