McLintock Glasgow area.....

Post by Heather Lyon » Wed Jun 08, 2005 11:16 am

Hello everyone

My grandmother was Isabella McLintock b 4 July 1885 from Kinningpark, Glasgow. Her father Robert McLintock, pawnbbroker, married Isabella Urquhart c 1878. I have looked at the 1901 Census and Robert's wife is named as Agnes. Listed at 42 Sussex Street, Kinning Park are Robert 48, Agnes 44 and 4 children William 19, Isabella 15, Robert 11, and John 9. Is this the family of my grandmother?

I think Robert's father was John McLintock married to Mary McCrone but I can't find them on any of the Census. I am also looking for the names of John McLintock's parents?

I have tried Scotlands People but I am not sure of the area around Kinning Park and SP won't let me log on at the moment.

I would appreciate any help.

Thanks

Heather

Did Isabella Urquhart [McLintock] perhaps die between 1881 and 1901?
and Robert remarry a lady called Agnes ?

The census would still show the family as son / daughter rather than stepson/daughter as the relationship is to the Head - Robert.

Do you have your grandmother's marriage cert.? is her mother shown as deceased on that ?

Sussex Street is still in existance [ though the buildings are new] and for once hasn't undergone a name change ! It's in Kinning Park which would be under Govan Lanarkshire. It's between Paisley Road West and junction 21/22 on the M8 motorway.

I remember as a child the 'Golden Balls ' of he pawnbroker hanging from a building on Paisley Road West quite near Sussex street, probably Admiral or Stanley Street. I wonder if that would be his place of work?

It looks to me as if Isabella died between 1881 and 1901. It would be a good idea to get the 1891 from SP and ascertain who the wife is then, either Isabella or Agnes.

Depending on who shows up as the wife in 1891, will then point you in the direction of the dates to look for Isabella's death

As the children are all shown as son/daughter of the head in 1901 then it would be reasonable to assume that all the children are Roberts and some of them could be from the 2nd marriage to Agnes. William and Isabella in 1901 are definitely Isabella's as is the Mary shown in the 1881 census. Robert and John in the 1901 could either be Isabella's or Agnes's. If you can't find Isabella's death for any reason, then you could look for Robert and John's births as you will have their place of birth on the 1901 census.

Good luck

Jean

Hi everyone

Thanks for your help. Yes Isabella McLintock died 1894 so Robert must have remarried.

I sometimes get the underground at Kinningpark so I must look for Sussex Street the next time I go to Glasgow.

Thanks again.

Heather

I had a look for the birth of Robert McLintock with parents John McLintock and Mary McCrone on the IGI site and couldn't find one. However I did find a birth for a Robert with parents Robert McLintock and Margaret Stewart. There are a number of children on the IGI for this couple.

If these are Robert's parents, then I have found them in the 1881 census. The same children that appear on the IGI are shown in the census.

Let me know if you want a copy of the census.

Hi HeatherK

Do you have any more details about Elizabeth e.g. approx d.o.b. and place of birth? Married or Single? Anyone else she may be living with.

If you have any of these then I'll have a look for you in the 1881 census.

Jean

Approx d.o.b. is really needed +/- 5 years
