Good morning all

I wonder if any of you good people out there can help.
I am looking for details of my great grandmothers brothers last heard of in the 1930's

Hugh Finlayson born 6th April 1886 and
James Finlayson born 4th April 1894 and last heard of in 1932 when he signed his mother's death certificate.

His address is given as overscraig, lairg, sutherland.

many thanks in anticipation for your help

bruce

Good morning, Bruce
Just to get them straight, is this the family in 1901?

1901 Scotland Census

Name: Hugh Finlayson
Age: 43
Where born: Perth
Civil parish: Kilspindie
County: Perthshire
Address: Pitroddie Quarry Houses
Occupation: Whin Stone Quarryman

Household Members:
Alexander Finlayson 4
Elspeth Finlayson 42
Flora Finlayson 10
Hugh Finlayson 43
Hugh Finlayson 14
James Finlayson 7
Jeannie Finlayson 12

A couple more questions:
Do you know the occupations of Hugh and James?
Was Hugh heard of in the 1930's, or only James?
Have you checked out the relevant death records on SP? There appear to be several possibilities for James, but not for Hugh.

I'm sure someone with more experience with recent records will come along soon with more ideas.

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah

Yes this is the family. Hugh stayed with my grandparents until his mother died then he disappeared never to be heard of again.

James is the one who actually registered his mothers death in 1932 and his address is given as overscraig in lairg

many thaks for your help

Brucel

Hi All

I am really banging my head off a brick wall with this family I really could do with some ideas.

I have Hugh and James Finlayson's Father living as a boarder in Errol on the 1881 census living at the old post office in Errol Perthshire.

He is living with the family that he married into.

On the census record he say's that his birthplace is Errol, I can find no records of him anywhere.

The Elspeth Sime on the ssame record became his wife in June 1881 my great Grand parents.

Hi bruce

After a quick read of this it seems that the focus you have is on finding two missing brothers...last seen around 1930 when they would have been roughly in the 30-50 year age range. Since online deaths only go on for another 25 years or so that would make them still very eligible to live beyond that 50 year online closure period doesn't it? Not sure where you're situated but have you considered searching for their deaths or even a marriage in the current records held at NRH or Park Circus??? If you're out of the country and can't do this for yourself you might want to consider hiring someone to search for you. Current indexes are slated to come online perhaps later this year but we're still not going to have access to the images to make a positive id with.

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean

Family information is that these two brothers never married.

I am more interested in where there father came from, He say's in all the records that I have that he was born in errol perthshire.

The first sight of this mn is in the 1881 census living with his future wife's family

it looks as though gent came from mars ;.)

Lots of our rellies seem to have come in the same [alien] then

Like yourself and many others on here, I also have a fair few who seem to have just "beamed in"

We all live in hope that the "mother ship" will update the old records

OK. How's about this for a hopeful family in Perth in 1861

Bell Cameron Head Mar 30 Housekepper Perthshire Perth
John Finlayson Son 6 do do
Jas Finlayson Son 2 do do
Margaret Simpson Daur 11 Scholar do do
Flora Cameron Visitor Mar 32 Housekepper do do
Christina Stewart F Cameron's daur 7 do do

James Finlayson Cameron was born 6th December 1858 in Perth the illegitimate son of Isabel Cameron, Yarn Winder.

Not clear where Hugh appears from but I have little doubt that he drops into this menage from somewhere.

Can anyone else help with this one as I am getting hopelessly lost with it. I feel sure that Hugh appears there but where??

Do you think that James in 1861 could metamorphose into Hugh?
