Hi dstew
A google search on Shotts Iron Works brings up this site:
http://www.monklands.co.uk/shotts/
which might give you some more info about the area. Looks like there may have been row housing at one time.
Also I found this description....
"Shotts Iron Works, Lanarkshire
Shotts Iron Works, was founded in 1801 by Robert and Hugh Baird. Over the next century and a half the works expanded to include collieries, brick works, lime works, 5 blast furnaces, a foundry, an electricity power station, central workshops, by-products works and 290 houses. Following the Coal Nationalisation Act, 1947 the Shotts Iron Works Company (producing 743,000 tons of coal in 1946), went into voluntary liquidation and ceased trading on 31 March 1947."
Does this help?
Best wishes
Jean

Hello Dstew
Welcome to the forum here on TS. In addition to Jean's excellent suggestion, I would recommend this site; www.mcpitz.com
Click onto "Mining Links" here you'll find "Colin Findlay's" (bottom row)
website on "History of the Scottish Iron & Steel History"
Regards
Marilyn

Wonder what your Shotts Ironworks family names are? I have a BAIN, a CONNOR and a WILSON married into my LIVINGSTON family there.
Hope your research is profitable.

Info about Shotts
Dstew,
I have ancestors from Shotts - many worked in the Ironworks - and still have family living in the town. There is an excellent local history group with a website - www.shottshistorygroup.co.uk - I have just tried it however, and it isn't working. Not sure if this is a temporary problem - or if the site is no longer available.
There is another site with some info -http://www.monklands.co.uk/shotts/.
The Shotts history group have produced some really good booklets about the area.
