Hi Anne, thank you for all your information. I'll take your advice and contact the Dunoon Obs. and see if they can help me. Have already been in touch with The Herald to whom I gave a copy of the mystery soldier (still haven't been able to find the original since I mislaid it) but as yet nothing has been printed in the paper or its sister paper the Evening Times. I will keep you posted.

Regards

Doddie

Hi doddie

Did you take a look at the picture of the van? It has one of the butchers standing beside it and you could compare it with your photo (or surviving copy) to see if it's the same person or looks like a relative. That might give you an idea of whether you are on the right lines.

Back again Doddie

Mum has been doing some researching for me and she tells me that the butcher was Jimmy Moodie. That would link in with there being a James of the right age on the census and also a James with a medal card. Jimmy obviously is dead and he had a son Duncan who also died fairly recently. There are, I believe, living family members but I'm not sure of names and locations and respecting our guidelines on TS could not post them anyway.

The person who drove the van was evidently one Bugsy Hunter. The shop closed in the 1960s, late enough for me to remember its existence indeed.

She says that the best person to contact for info would be John Stirling at Dunoon Museum, which is in Dunoon Castle. info@castlehousemuseum.org.uk

I hope that this turns out to be the right person. I don't think it would be too difficult to track down the living family if you or someone else was at NRH.

Good luck with that. Please please let us know how you get on with writing to the Standard. I would also suggest dropping a quick email to Mr Stirling at the museum as I hear he is an O:) where finding information for people is concerned.

Hi Anne, I wrote to John Stirling this morning. Got the bumph off in the post this morning. Fingers crossed that he is able to help me out. Have heard/read nothing from The Herald or Dunoon Observer. I was really hoping that something would be printed because the exposure to the local readership (in the Dunoon area and the West coast generally) could have been invaluable. As ever, I will keep you posted and once again your help and interest in this line of my research is much appreciated.

Hi Doddie

Mum says your request was printed in the "Standard" as it tends to be known. Don't give up hope of a reply yet.

Hi Anne, thanks for letting me know. The only access to the paper I have is through checking the online version which must be slightly different from the normal publication. Could I be a bit cheeky? Would you be able to get a copy of the newspaper and perhaps send a copy of the article by attachment this website thread? If it is not poss. that'll be o.k. I'm just delighted to know that my query did get printed.

I'll phone Mum and see if she still has it. Unfortunately she's going off to visit my sister tomorrow so it may take a while for me to get it. Hope you can hold on till she's back and has time to send it on to me.

Hi Doddie

I was down in Dunoon today but my old aunt has stopped getting the Standard as her eyesight is too poor to read it now. She did have the back page as an 80 yr old friend was featured with her swimming memdals.
Like Anne I remember the shop but never shopped there so no help with recognition.
