I don’t think there’s much doubt that the photo was taken during or very close to WW1 which started in 1914. If he was born 1865 he would have been age 49 then and he looks about that to me. What do you think?
The Boer War was happening around 1900 which was when he was aged 35 and to me he looks older than that, and besides the uniform doesn’t look right for that period.
If he was in the Army during the Boer War it would probably have shown up on the 1901 census.
