Hi Anne, apologies for putting you to so much hassle. I have now just discovered that life isn't as complicated as I always presume it is. I spoke on the phone to a gentleman at the Standard. He said he would be only to happy to send me a copy of the relevant paer in the post. He also said he would be interested to find out what feedback I get so he can let the readers know. I couldn't be more chuffed. As usual I will let you know what transpires.

Relieved to hear that Doddie as mother has virtuously and diligently recycled her copy of the Standard already!!!

Hi Anne, received my copy of the Standard today. Very chuffed with the presentation of my piece including a clear copy of the photograph (I forgot to tell you that I eventually found it 'hiding'amongst some of my papers). I will endeavour to post the whole article on this thread if I can figure out the rather complex/drawn out process of uploading an attachment. It seems to be much more convoluted than it really should be. Keep your fingers crossed.

hi Doddie
It is not possible to upload an attachment to the TS forum. If you wish to display an image, you would need to upload it to somewhere like http://www.photobucket.com, then paste the link into your post.
Best wishes

Re: Old soldier, Cameron Highlanders (First World War)
Think I have discovered the identity of my mystery soldier. My uncle was talking to a friend of his and just by chance he may have come up with the answer. The original story I was told was a bit of a red herring, it seems. The man's name is very probably Edward Rankin(e) Stagg. He was in the Cameron Highlanders. The only military record that has survived (as far as I can see) is his medal index card. He was born in Rothesay c. 1898, the same year as my grandfather. The general consensus is that the two men met each other in the army. After the war Edward set up a plumbing business which he later lost in a business deal that went wrong. In the mid 1920's it seems he emigrated to the U.S. and became a very succesful businessman. He is listed in the 1930 U.S. census, living in Watertown, Massachusetts. Don't know when he died. My uncle says my grandfather met up with Edward again purely by chance after the war - and before America - when they were bowling in Rothesay. The men were close friends apparently. Still trying to find out more, but pleased with I have discovered thus far.

Hi Doddie
Pleased that you are well on the way to solving the mystery but given that it seems likely that Jimmy Moodie was in the regiment too he may have known them as well, though he is probably not your grandfather's close friend in the picture as you say.
