Hi Sarah and everyone
Ive done a bit more researching. Remember John Stewart's sons Thomas and John born in Corfu.
well i found out some more information about John. He married Isabella Dickens Thomson in 1851. John was a brass founder by tade and he died aged 29 in April 1855 suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis. Isabella died a month later from the same disease on 24 may 1855 they left two children John aged 2 and a half and it looks like Johnann aged 4 months (there is a word after which may say dead) but i cant make out the name or the word on the certificate. but i think the 4 month old child was called after its mums mum as the name on john and isabella's marriage cer dated 1829 shows her mum as what looks like johnann.

Not sure if anyone can assist

Hello Alistair,
What a sad story :( Can you upload the image to the gallery so we can try to decipher the handwriting?
Best wishes,
Sarah

Hello Alastair,

Don’t worry about SP, I’m sure they would be only too happy to see the documents they sell read and understood by the people who buy them.

But in any case you don’t need to post the whole document. Because of size limitations it would probably end up being displayed much too small to be read by anyone. Just post the problem bit plus some of its surroundings, but no more than about a quarter of the whole document.

If you have no experience with photo editing software maybe a screen shot would be the easiest way, especially if you have Vista or Windows 7. Here are some basic instructions for getting an image of what you can see on screen. http://www.ehow.com/how_6536434_save-go ... s-jpg.html

Once you have the image you can post it into the TS Gallery. You’ll see a link at the top of this page. I think you first have to create your own album there. That done you click on Upload File, select your album, and browse to the image file on your computer that you wish to upload. When uploaded click continue and near the image you’ll see the URL link (http ://talkingscot...etc) which you can copy and paste into your forum posting. Give that a try.

Hope that helps,
Alan

Hi all OK I've made an attempt to paste the death certificate so you cann see. Both John's and Isabelles are the basically the same.
The next quest is to try and find the childrens history if they had one. as i say im pretty sure the word next to 4 mths is died/dead but see what you think
and I hope you can read it !!

Cheers Alastair

Greetings.

This I believe will be a direct link to your gallery post.

http://www.talkingscot.com/gallery/disp ... play_media

Unfortunately at 98Kb it is a small file that does not enlarge very well. The photo next to it, in the new image configuration, is one I posted from the Gordonton Cenotaph, and I resized it down from it's original size of some 1,200Kb to a file of 298Kb to post. When you click on it, in the gallery, it blows up to a size that you can see.

I don’t know what the file size limit for uploading is on the TS gallery, but some other sites are caped about 500Kb.

I've had a look at the certificate and read it as follows:
  • [Name, Rank, Profession, or Occupation] Stewart, Isabella Dickson Thomson
    [Sex] Female
    [Age] 25 years
[Where born and how long in this district] McDougall Street, 2 years
[Parents' Names, and Rank, Profession, or Occupation] Alexander Thomson, Shoemaker; Johnan Thomson, maiden name Thorburn
    [Spouse] John Stewart, Brassfounder, deceased
[Issue, in order of birth] (1) John, 2½ years; (2) JohnAnn, 4 months dead
[When died] May Twentyfifth, 10h 20m PM
[Where died] No. 23 South Back of Canongate
[Cause of Death] Phthisis, 18 months at least, as certified by Thomas A G Balfour, MD, St John's Hill, saw the Deceased on the 25th May
[Burial Place] Calton Old Burying Ground, Greig Wilson(?)
[Signature of Informant] Alexander Thomson, Father
[Registered] 1855 May Twentyeighth at Canongate, John Hunter, Registrar
Some of it is difficult to read, so there could be mistakes in the above information.

All the best,

AndrewP
