hi John thankyou for decephiring the certificate for the others. I have to agree that it looks like johnann (spelling) had died and I can only presume that she/he contracted TB from her/his mother who had been suffering from the disease for 18 months so she must of been carrying the child while having TB so would of passed the virus to her unborn child.

I feel so sad that part of my family died like this, but my concentration is now on the possible survivor John who was 2.5 at the time but I can't find any birth records or death.

I would also like to find if at all possible johnann birth/deat certifcate but i do realise when both parents were stricken with TB the poor child was probably not registered.

I have tried to link John as being adopted by Thomas (John's brother) or perhaps Isabella's family but I can't find a link.

I know this sounds silly as it happened a long time ago but Ifeel I have lost a part of my family and they feel as real today as if I had lost an immediate family member today.

My kind regards Alastair

Do you ever feel that someone upstairs is helping you !!!
I've just found John Stewarts death certificate and it reads:
John Stewart died 30 january 1870 aged 17 from Pulmonary Consumption, father named as John Stewart Brassfounder and Mother Isabella Stewart both deceaced. he died in canongate Edinburgh.

No luck on the little 4 month old child no matter how many combinations I put into the search.

What a sad story :(
In the 1830s and 1840s my gg grandmother's brother lost all of his 5 sons, most due to consumption. The one who lived the longest died at 24... Only the one daughter survived and it was speculated that she managed not to contract the disease because, being the only girl, she slept in another room.

Best wishes,
Sarah

As the parent's both died in 1855 it's very likely the wee one died before statutary registration started,
so her birth/death may not be recorded.
As you have a place of burial noted on Isabella's maybe that would be a a place to start - the records for that church if they have survived.

Hi Alastair,

Old Calton Cemetery is in Waterloo Place, a hundred yards or so east of the East End of Princes Street. The cemetery is older than Waterloo Place, and is split into two parts where the road was driven through the cemetery in the early years of the 19th century. The small part is on the north side of Waterloo Place, and the majority of it is to the south of the street.

It is a civic cemetery rather than a churchyard. I think if the cemetery records exist for that era for that cemetery that they will be held at the City of Edinburgh Council Cemetery Records Office at Mortonhall Crematorium.

hi all
I found John Stewart aged 8 living with his grand parents alexander Thomson and johann in the 1861 census he is listed as Grandson. I'm glad he lived with his mum's family for a while. On his death certirficate in 1870 the signature of informant looks like james fyfe (spelling ) listed as uncle. so I presume alexander and Johann died pre 1870 and some uncle took over his upbringing untill he died aged 17.

Hi Andrew I did try Mortonhall but they have advised they don't have records pre 1857 and to try with Register house in Edinburgh who I've emailed.
I would love to be able to find their gravestones so that I can get a picture of them so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Register house will be able to help.
Failing that I might have to pay a visit to Calton, which would be tricky and see If I can find them myself.

Do you know if it's a very large cemetary and if anyone knows where I would start to look if I was able to visit ?

Kind regards Alastair

Greetings Alistair.

We Kiwis like to visit the old graves also, but by all accounts it pays to get good local advice before making a visit, in person, to a cemetery of interest. One of my distant cousins is just back from a visit to the local parishes in Lanark, Renfrew, & Ayrshire, and what they saw confirmes these comments made by a TalkingScot local.

QUOTE
I do love to see a well kept cemetery, but most of ours are in an appalling condition. I visited one in deepest Ayrshire where most of the stones had been uprooted and stacked like dominoes against a wall. We were lucky. the one we were looking for was one of the few which survived the official desecration. All in the name of Health and Safety.
END OF QUOTE.

Hope you are one of the lucky ones.

Alan SHARP.

Hi Alistair,

Old Calton Cemetery is not a big cemetery. It is (or was last time I was there) a well kept cemetery. See the aerial view of it on one of my previous replies on this thread.

Most of the old cemeteries in Edinburgh have been surveyed for their pre-1855 headstones. It may be worth an e-mail to the Edinburgh and Scottish Collection at the Edinburgh Central Library; or to the Scottish Genealogy Society Library to see if they could consult a book in their collection for you to see if there is a record of such a headstone. This assumes that there is a headstone still standing there - be aware that they may not have had the money for a headstone, or the headstone may not have survived.
