Photos of Graves
For eighteen months a group of people with an interest in Scottish war memorials have been freely sharing their photographs, transcriptions and knowledge to anyone with access to the internet. Over the last few months many of those people have also been sharing their Scottish gravestone photographs via the same format - a free to join and free to browse internet forum.
The members of these two projects have one aim. To freely share their research with people in Scotland and all over the world.
The response we've had in such a short space of time has been fantastic. We already have photographs and information on over two thousand war memorials and over seven thousand gravestones posted from members all over Scotland and overseas. We know from feedback that it is a great resource for many people. So much so that what started out as a place to share information with like-minded hobbyists is now turning into something greater.
We are now in a position where we seriously hope to record ALL of Scotland's war memorials and all the gravestones with military transcriptions
It's worth pointing out that this project has all been done informally and voluntarily and for no financial gain. We are not affiliated to any organisation and everything that has been done to date has been done by people joining our forums and contributing their own photographs, transcriptions and data in their own time. Not one penny has been sought in funding from public bodies and not one penny is charged to anyone to use the forums. It's all free, and it's all done by volunteers.
To complete our undertaking so everyone with an interest in Scottish genealogy can benefit we now need more people to join us. The members who have contributed so far can only cover so much ground. What we want is others out there with similar interests to help add their local knowledge to these two national projects.
People from all over Scotland and the rest of the world can currently access data on war memorials and graves for many parts of our country but with a combined effort we can cover them from the Borders to Shetland and Aberdeenshire to the Western Isles. As far as we know no other country in the world would have such a comprehensive and free resource available at the touch of a keyboard.
Please take the time to visit the two Project forums Scottish War Memorials Project and Scottish War Graves Project and if you think you can help us complete these Scottish genealogical resources please sign up.

This looks like an extremely interesting project and I'm sure the more people get to hear about it, the more support you are likely to get. I'm off to check out your sites and if I can add some photos from my own locality, I will.
Good luck with the project.

Returning later ... Adam, there's some great photos - I looked particularly at Renfrewshire, which is where I live.

Thanks for the kind words. Although we've been around for a while we don't seem to be that well known and I'm hoping posting here on a national forum will help spread the word.
I know there are lots of people out there interested in their own war memorials and local cemeteries and it would be great if they could share their knowledge and make it available to those in other parts of Scotland and all over the world.
Just the other week we were able to help someone from New Zealand find a relative's name on a war memorial and a great uncle's grave in a local cemetetry. He will visit both when he comes to Scotland later this year. Without our forums he may have never known they were there to visit.

Hi Adam
Good idea to post here on TS - there is quite an overlap of interests with our two forums.
I'm already a member of your site and have posted photographs of a War Memorial Stained Glass Window at Neilston recently. It is a wonderful resource and deserves all the support you can drum up! =D>
Best wishes

Hi Adam,
I've been on your site several times and although I don't have photographs to post I've spent many an hour looking through all the wonderful photos.
All of the contributors do a marvelous job and obviously with such dedication. I found one posted by Anne Anderson that I'm looking into.
Cheers to all you dedicated and special people for a job well done!

Thanks to all who replied. It's probably worth mentioneing something else. Although right now we are looking for photographs we are actually looking for any information about the memorials. We would like to know about the fundraising, the unveilings, if the memorial has been moved etc. We want to know the criteria for inclusion of a name on the memorial, we want to know more about the people behind the names, photos of those named and anything else of interest.
Because it is a forum format it means anyone can update any information no matter how small. (the more the better obviously!)
The only thing we ask is that the discussions are kept on-topic as much as possible.
Here's an example of what we are after..

Just a quick update on our progress.
The Scottish War Memorial Project now has over 1200 out of 1,378 Scottish civic war memorials listed on our free to access forum.
We only need 155 more memorials to complete the list. A large number of these missing memorials are in the Highland Council area and we would appreciate it if anyone in the North of Scotland who lives in or is visiting the more remote corners of Scotland could help the project by photographing any of the following memorials:

If you have an interest in war memorials we'd love to see you on the war memorial forum. It may be that you don't just have photographs of memorials we don't have but you may have other photographs of memorials we already have posted which would be of interest to our members.
Just because a memorial has already been recorded it doesn't mean we don't want more posts about it.
Here is the list of the other missing memorials. Since my last post we've had a few more posted so the total missing is now down from 168 to only 149.
