Argyll & Bute Militia

Post by SusanScot » Tue Jun 17, 2008 1:41 pm

My STOKES family were involved in the above.

Isaiah STOKES b. 1828, Dublin.
b. 1855 Ireland married Emma SPEAR (who was English) in Guernsey.
Son Patrick Frederick STOKES b. 1857 on board HMS Eveline, passage to Cape of Good Hope.
Daughter Elenor STOKES b.1867? in Campbeltown.
Son Alexander STOKES b. 1867? also in Campbeltown
1871 & 1881 at Campbeltown militia barracks, serjeant (sic)
Not found 1891 or 1901.
No death found in England or Scotland.
I can find no more information on Elenor or Alexander.
Patrick Frederick was possibly on the "Elen" in 1879.
In 1881 he is lodging in Barony, Lanark, an engine fitter.
No record after that, and no death found.
Patrick was my great-great=grandfather.

Any help with filling any gaps in the above would be gratefully received.

Many thanks for reading.

Hello Susan,

I don’t know how common a name Isaiah Stokes is but:

The National Archives has a record of an Isaiah Stokes, Born Kilmore (not sure where that is), Monmouthshire, served in Monaghan Militia & discharged, presumably 1829, aged 54. Could that be his father? http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/cata ... D=-4022984

He appears to be the Quarter-Master Sergt. Stokes discharged 1828 mentioned in the records of the Monaghan Militia at the bottom of this page http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/

On FreeBMD there’s a death of an Isaiah Stokes in Wales in 1887 and an Emma in the same district in 1890. Both are about the right age and don’t appear to have been in Wales in 1881.

Deaths Dec 1887
Stokes Isaiah 57 Carmarthen 11a508a

Deaths Dec 1890
Stokes Emma 53 Carmarthen 11a613
(Carmarthen spans the boundaries of Carmarthenshire, Dyfed and Pembrokeshire)

On Ancestry there’s an Isiah Stokes b.1873 Scotland living somewhere in Pembrokeshire.

The IGI has an Isaiah Stokes born 1873 Campbeltown, Argyll, to Wentworth Stokes and Jane Griffiths. It looks like Wentworth was born in Ireland in 1826 according to the 1871 census where Isaiah is transcribed as Stokas.

I can’t check this out without an Ancestry subscription but maybe there’s a connection of some of the Irish born, Argyll residing, Stokes, to Wales in particular Pembrokeshire and thereabouts.

Hope that’s of some use.
Alan

Hi Susan,
I assume this is the family in 1871, with allowances made for Ancestry's garbled transcription  I particularly like Frederick's birthplace :!:
1871
Argyll Street, Campbeltown, Argyll
Isaiah Stokas, 43, Head, born Ireland, Seycant Argyll Bate Milton Staff
Emma Stokas, 36, Wife, born England
Frederick Stokas, 14, Son, born Stben, Abea On France To Cope of Food
Elenor Stokas, 3, Daughter, born Campbeltown, Argyll

And in 1881:

1881
Argyll St Militia Barracks, Campbeltown, Argyllshire
Isaiah Stokes, 50, Head, born Ireland, Sergeant A & B. A Militia
Emma Stokes, 46, Wife, born England
Eleonor Stokes, 13, Daughter, born Campbeltown, Argyllshire, Scholar

In 1891 it looks like Eleanor is a nurse in the District Northampton County Insane Asylum in Upton, Northamptonshire. She is unmarried, age 23, born in Scotland.

(Indexed on Ancestry under "Eleanor Stoker", but the surname is clearly "Stokes".

I don't find Alexander in any of the censuses with his family. Assuming you are sure he was born... do you suppose he died before the 1871 census?

All the best,
Sarah

Alan and Sarah,

Thank you so much for your very kind responses. you have both been very helpful indeed.

Alan - Perhaps the Isaiah you found from Kilmore is my missing link! I have a whole collection of Stokes on file, and have long been interested in Wentworth, especially as he was born in Ireland, and was in Campbeltown at the same time as my family. I am quite confident that the deaths you found for Isaiah and Emma in Carmarthen are the right ones. I am sending for the certificates, in the hope that maybe an informant's name may give me a lead.

I now have a lot of new research to do.

Sarah - Thank you so very much for the census info. I had the 1871 & 1881 entries, but it is so pleasing to have 1891 info for Eleanor.

I have not been able to find Patrick Frederick's death. I know he died before Feb 1908, but have no Census info for the family for 1891 or 1901. The last child I know of was John Lawrence Stokes, born Nov 1879.
Mother Mary, nee Jordan, was in Dublin in 1908. In 1911 she is still there. In 1930 she died in Glasgow.
Elizabeth Agnes Stokes, my gt-grandmother, married in Govan, Glasgow in 1903, so had presumably been in the area for a while.

Several certificates later, I have the following new information.

Isaiah died 1887 in Carmarthen, an army pensioner.
Emma died in 1890 in Carmarthen. The informant was Frederick Stokes, brother-in-law, from Abergwilly.

Frederick, Isaiah's brother, was born 1827 in Monaghan, married Margaret Sarah McGifford, nee HYDE in Pembroke 1865. They had 4 children Edward Hyde Stokes, Frederick W, Ernest A & Herbert J. The family is to be found in Carmarthen 1871-1901. Frederick is a Chelsea Pensioner Sergeant/Instructor of gunnery RAM Staff militia Monahan.

From Frederick & Margaret's marriage certificate, I have his father as Isaiah Stokes, farmer: not an army man, then.

I believe this is the right Frederick, brother of my Isaiah, and that their father was therefore Isaiah, farmer. Does this rule out the Kilmore Isaiah as their father? And how to find a link between these two and all the other Monaghan-born Stokeses I have on file?

Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Isaiah Stokes and wife Emma Spear

I have seen some posts on here dated several year back but would like to respond. To those searching for Isaiah Stokes and his wife Emma. I have the following connection.
My Great Grandmother Emily Augusta Loy was the daughter of Samuel Loy and Rebecca Stokes. Amongst her siblings was Wentworth William Loy b 1857 d. 1863 and Wentworth Johnston Loy b 1844.I see the name Wentworth Stokes appeared in past posts so there must be a link.
SAmuel Loy was in the British Army and the National Archives have his records.
William Stokes b Monaghan 1833 d 1916 also ex Army was buried in Ainsworth near Bury Lancashire, in the churchyard where Emily A Farrington nee Loy and her daughter Emily A Barlow nee Farrington my grandmother. His gravestone recently removed stated that he was Sergeant Major 38 years in the RFA.
Any one with links or further information?
