Old soldier, Cameron Highlanders (First World War)

Post by doddie » Mon Apr 26, 2010 1:44 am

Very, very long shot this one. Trying to establish name and background details of a pal of my late grandfather's from his time in the First World War. Gentleman concerned served with the Cameron Highlanders (poss. 6th Battalion). Was wounded during the war and also earned two overseas service stripes. He was possibly from the Dunoon area and in later life became a successful businessman (poss. managing/owning a number of butchers shops in Dunoon area or wider). Date of birth early to mid 1890's. This could be a rather large red herring but the surname of Moodie (?) has been come up in conversation. Have recently mislaid a photograph of gentleman concerned - will post on forum as soon as I can. Apologies for the vagueness of the information but this is as accurate as I can be at the moment.

Try contacting the Cameron's archivist at Fort George to see if they hold a list of 6th Bn soldiers from WWI.

Hi there

I had a look at the British Phone Directories on Ancestry.co.uk for Moodies who were Butchers ;
Well there was one in Dunoon ! Listed as Moodie Brothers
In 1910 /11 at 4 Argyle Mans. and from c. 1920 till 1927 at 225 Argyle Street. Phone num Dunoon 3 !

Had all look on Ancestry too at the medal rolls and also at National Archives for Moodies who served with Cameronians during WW1.
Found 6 ( but don't know that this is accurate )

Clement T Moodie Cameron Highlanders, Labour Corps 15930, 527505
James Moodie Highland Light Infantry, Lancashire Fusiliers, Cameron Highlanders 43132, 49730, S/43463
James Moodie Cameron Highlanders, Royal Highlanders, Army Service Corps 32251, 41901, M/428309
John R Moodie Cameron Highlanders, Seaforth Highlanders 200923, 263041
William Moodie Cameron Highlanders S/11809
William Moodie Cameron Highlanders S/26724
and
Alexander Moodie ' S/15866

There are some pension and service records on Ancestry but the latter are not complete. Did spot William S/11809 - he was a Wishaw man .

Also on the cwgc site, you can find poor Alexander who died in 1916. Interestingly perhaps he was from Dunoon , and his parents were Archibald and Janet of Dalreoch villa.

I have looked for Archibald and Janet on the census - by 1901 , Janet is the head - perhaps Archibald is deceased.
Address: Mc Arthur St Dalreoch

Household Members:
Name Age
Janet Moodie 52
William Moodie 30
Archibald Moodie 19
Rachel H Moodie 17
Dugald Moodie 15
Duncan Moodie 12
James J Moodie 10
Alexander Moodie 7

Of the children Archibald is a butcher (journeyman) and Dugald is a butcher's assistant.
.
10 years earlier another brother Murray ( born circa 1873) is with the family - he was a flesher ( butcher too ) .

So perhaps Murray and several of his younger siblings formed Moodie brothers ?

Do any of the forenames ring a bell ?

Sally

A very neat idea to use the WWI medal cards records to link to possible MOODIE's involved.

However, I'd still suggest an email to the Camerons' archivist at Fort George !

The Cameronians were the Scottish Rifles, a lowland regiment. The Camerons were the Queens Own Cameron Highlanders, a highland regiment.

Thanks

Thankyou Adam for putting me to rights there. I suppose subconsciously I had always just assumed ...
dangerous !
I can confirm my searches on the rolls were for "cameron" .

Hi

There was a Moodie's the butchers in Dunoon until ?very recently. (Just remembered how old I am so my idea of recent may not be anyone else's). I can't remember exactly when but my mother would know, I'm sure. At the moment it's too late to phone her but I'll do so tomorrow and if she has any info I'll add it to this thread. Pity my aunties who had shops in the town centre have both died as they would have been good sources but that's life.

The name Archie Moodie rings a bell with me...? a son continuing the business. Steak pies and mince rounds also seem connected in what passes for my brain. Will have to phone the surviving olds.

BTW Have a look at Dunoonpeeps.com at the photos halfway down the page for a photo of the butcher's van.

I spoke to my mother and she remembers the shop well. She says it was at the top of Argyll Street on the junction with John Street roughly where the offices of the local newspaper are now. She thinks it was two brothers who had the shop and says that they had a van that did the rounds of the town and the neighbouring villages. Her own mother used to shop there. (She died in 1947). Mum cannot remember when the shop closed and does not know what happened to the people who had it but she has said she will ask around. She thinks I might be right in thinking that I remember it so it could still have been around in the 1960s.

I will also email my cousin to see if her father who is in his nineties remembers anything about the family.

The dunoonpeeps website has a guest book which allows for comments or questions so you could post a query there or write to the local paper, The Dunoon Observer and Argyllshire Standard. If someone from Dunoon came home wounded from WW1 I'm pretty sure the paper would have covered it. Hope this brings you a bit closer to finding out about your grandfather's friend.

Something from the Edinburgh Gazette 15th June 1909:

SEQUESTRATION of WILLIAM JENKINS, sometime
Farmer. Gartcharron, Craignish, Argyllshire, now
Shepherd, Rose Hall Farm, Doune, Perthshire.
JAMES M'LAY, Chartered Accountant, Glasgow, has
been elected Trustee on the Estate ; and William
Macduff Jeffray, Solicitor, Auchterarder and Dunblane,
Murray Moodie, Butcher, Argyll Mansions, Argyll Street,
Dimoon, and William Thomas Smith, Accountant, Glasgow,
have been elected Commissioners. The Examination
of the Bankrupt will take placp within the Chambers of
the Sheriff-Substitute (Mr. Boyd), County Buildings, 50
Wilson Street, Glasgow, on Wednesday the 23rd day of
June 1909, at ten o'clock A.M. The Creditors will meet
within the Chambers of Messrs. M'Lay, M'Alister, &
M'Gibbon, Chartered Accountants, 94 Hope Street, Glasgow,
on Monday the 5th day of July 1909, at eleven
o'clock forenoon.
JAMBS M'LAY, C.A., Trustee.
14th June 1909.
SEQUESTRATION

It looks as though the firm was in existence at that stage and was owed money by this Mr Jenkins (very remiss of him).
