I'm trying to find information on John R. Fisher b. 1865 Glasgow. John was in the war but where was he station? Story has it he had a son Jack who came home shellshocked after the war and lived out his days in a hospial in Rothesay. I would like more information on these Fishers.
Thanks

Hi Rose
Where have you looked already? Have you searched for John in the census data and followed him though? That would give you more information on his family. Have you searched for a marriage? Have you searched for his birth - where in Glasgow was he born? Do you know the names of his parents? You can search for all of these on the Scotlands People site, if you have not done so already.
How do you know that he was born in 1865 - can you tell us how you know this? It helps us to help you if we know where your information came from, and if you can tell us anything else you know about him.
Best wishes
Lesley

I have had a quick look on Ancestry no exact matches but I never trust their ratings anyway. If you have more information relating to him and his service we can try and help a bit more.
Pension Records WW1:
James Fisher abt 1871 Baroney Lanark 21
WW1 Service Records:
John Fisher abt 1873 Old Monkland Lanark 4
These are the closest I can find on Ancestry for a John R Fisher, born 1865 +/- 5yrs.
Medal Index Cards
There are alot of John R Fisher, do you have any more info on his service like number & regiment

Re: Need help WW1
This is what I have on the Fisher family.
John (Peter) or Peter John Fisher b.? ( Navy Captain ) m. Mary (Margaret) Murray. They had a son John Robertson Fisher b. Oct. 25, 1826/27 in West Greenock, Renfrew. He m. Margaret Jessie Kelly Aug. 1, 1855 in Rothesay, Bute. They had 5 children:
1 Ronald b. 1857 Newfoundland
2. Margaret b. 1859 Newfoundland
3. Peter b. Dec. 1861
4. John Robertson b. oct 1865 Blythswood, Glasgow.
5. Jessie Lucy b. Oct. 1872 Blythswood, Glasgow
Someone sent me this:
1881 census: Bank Buildings, Bothwell, Lanark
John R. Fisher head 54 b. Greenock, late Fish Merchant
Margaret wife 49 b. Rothesay
Margaret dau 19 b. Canada
John R. son 14 b. Glasgow, Lanark
Jessie L. dau 7 b. Glasgow
Now family story has John b. 1865 m. to a Lamont ? haven't found it yet. With one son Jack could be John too. Jack came home shellshocked after WW1.
There is a picture in the family of John R. Fisher in an army uniform standing in front of a tent.

Hello Aley,
Here’s your previous thread about this family viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15109&start=0
Would you be able to post the soldier photo on something like PhotoBucket so that we can see it? Maybe someone will have an idea from the uniform or surroundings as to which regiment or even which war he was involved in. http://www.ehow.com/how_4530461_put-pic ... ucket.html

Re: Need help WW1
Hello Aley,
Here’s your posting on the other forum http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.ph ... 410.0.html
A bandolier usually suggests a mounted man but I can’t see any sign of him wearing spurs. I don’t know what the rifle is but I can’t see a magazine so perhaps it is single shot and the bandolier is a more convenient way of carrying ammunition in that circumstance. Just to the left of the soldier there’s some sort of a stamp on the tent material, or is that a watermark on the paper, the curved word across the ‘top’ appears to be Savannah. I can’t make out the rest.
The cap badge and collar dogs do have some similarity to the antelope of the Royal Warwickshire as suggested on the other forum, and as seen here, but it doesn’t look quite right. http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=htt ... s%3Disch:1 He seems to be wearing leather gaiters rather than puttees on his lower legs, there appear to be buckles near the tops.
It’s probably a good idea to post on the Great War forum, as suggested. http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forum ... wforum=150 There’s also the British Badge forum http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/forums/index.php
If the photo you posted only appears the same size on your computer as it does on the forum page it may be that you’ve scanned it at a very low resolution such as 72 dpi. It is always a good idea to scan any photographs at 300 dpi especially those you may not be able to easily access again. Magnifying low resolution photograph images does not create more detail but may in some circumstances make things easier to see. Here’s your photo on PhotoBucket in two parts with changes to contrast etc settings. http://s944.photobucket.com/albums/ad28 ... lkingScot/
He looks fairly elderly for a soldier. Maybe he has had previous military experience. If all you have on him is what you’ve listed it would be a very good idea, as suggested previously, to get the 1891, 1901, and next year the 1911, census material plus his marriage and children’s births between 1881 and the time the photo was taken. There may be much info about him there, more than your present line of enquiry will lead you to.
Hope that helps,
Alan

Re: Need help WW1
That’s a good start Aley, although there’s no signs there of any previous military involvement.
363 Victoria Road appears to have been about here although I don’t know if they’ve changed the numbers or how old those buildings are. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=%22 ... 54,,0,4.84
The Google camera car doesn’t appear to have been down the first part of Kenmure Street but there doesn’t appear to be anything old in that section. http://maps.google.com/maps?t=h&hl=en&i ... .8,,0,-4.4
See how you go with the military forums.
All the best,
Alan

There isn't anything old there now but there was!Currie wrote:The Google camera car doesn’t appear to have been down the first part of Kenmure Street but there doesn’t appear to be anything old in that section.
the 1895 map shows tenement blocks all round the St Andrew's rd/Kenmuir St/McCulloch St block,
and only a short gap on the north western side of the KemuirSt/McCulloch St junction [or Prince's St as the western part of McCulloch St was still called..
The western side now has a Primary School.
The blocks were all gone by the 1980's.
