Could someone help me find some info on my great great grandfather john Morrison Rooney who died on the 25th of May 1917 over in France. I got this info for him on CWGC

Is there anyway to find out what the 10th Bn did in WWI and what battles they fought, is there a war diary that might contain some info of them and could even have Johns name in one. Was there any battles fought close to the 25th of may 1917 that he could fought in but got shot and died of wounds later. It says on his death cert he was KIA.

He’s included in a long list of rank and file Scottish losses reported in The Scotsman, 23 July, 1917.
DIED OF WOUNDS.
CAMERONIANS (Scot. Rifles.)—Foulis, 240877, R. (Motherwell); Laing, 11452, A. (Glasgow); Murphy, 8383, J. (Glasgow); Rooney, 41571, J. (Glasgow).

Did you get his medal card from Ancestry or from the National Archives (listed under Scottish Rifles).

Have you checked Ancestry to see if his service record has survived. About two thirds of WW1 British Army records were destroyed during WW2.

He died of wounds, which means he wasn’t killed outright on the battlefield. Nothing earlier came up in the newspaper saying he had been wounded so it’s likely that he died not long after being wounded.

Yes i managed to get is card on ancestry but i am confused to what medals he got because it dosent give names it gives a letter then some numbers.

the website you gave me for the picture of johns grave is amazing, on their i got john my great great grandfather, great great uncle and my second cousin three times removed

Are these the sort of medals John would have got, my great grandfather alexander (also on other posts) got the british war and victory medal.

My ggf was also in 10th Scottish Rifles (Cameronians) - he was killed at Loos in 1915. I have the particular volume of Soldiers Died in the Great War - I'll look him up and post any information.

From SDGW,

41571 Pte J Rooney enlisted in Glasgow. His place of birth is not listed. He died, on 25 Jun 1917, of wounds inflicted in France and Flanders.

When I originally did a search for the 10th perhaps I was having some internet problems, which has happened recently trying to connect through my isp, but today I read a nice article about the 10th about their WWI engagement
Never mind maybe its not so odd. And anyway I am ex navy don't know much about those landlubbers
